Has anyone gone Scuba Diving with an ostomy? I’d like to go through some training but I am worried about the water-pressure and what it will do to the bag/wafer.

Although, it does give me a built in flotation device…

I don't dive but I remember seeing a previous post in which someone said it was the one thing they couldn't do with the bag. I think it would cause the bag to expand under water and possibly burst? Not sure but hopefully someone will come along who has more info.

I have a friend who has an ileostomy and is a scuba diving instructor, it has never stopped him from doing what he loves doing.

"Fitness and Diving: The direct type of ileostomy and colostomy poses no danger to the diver. Ensuring a secure fit of the external bag can prevent spillage of faecal material. A continent ileostomy poses theoretical risk if gas swallowed during the dive cannot escape through the ileostomy site."

I scuba dived in Greece before my ostiomy..so cant comment on bag but I remeber having to put weights around me in my belt to stay down easier. I am not certain but its the J pouch that is more at rist then the ileo. Or was it waterskiing?..Smiler

I went scuba diving several times with my ileostomy. I avoided carbonated drinks and didn't each much in the hours preceding the dives. Spending a long time submerged in water did make me concerned that my bag could become detatched but the wetsuit kept it secure and i had no problems at all, just an awesome experience.

Do it. Smiler
