Hi! I just had surgery June 25th. Removal of J-pouch to perm. illeostomy. I am having major problems with the smell of my bag when I empty it. I had temp. illeostomy 7 years ago and didn't have this problem. I know it will never smell great, but right now it is very bad. I know there has to be a solution so that it helps somewhat. Please let me know if anyone has any great solutions.
Thanks, Kerianne |

Hello - I use Devrom pills - one with each meal and I never have a problem with smells. I know some people are using other things in the bag also, but the Devrom works for me

Hi Kerianne,
Try putting a few drops of Peroxide 3% into you bag each time you empty it. I believe it is a tried and tested favourite amongst many ostomists. I actually don't use anything because my poo really doesn't smell that bad unless I've eaten strong flavoured foods such as garlic or fish, in which case it just smells of garlic or fish. Even coffee smells like coffee on the way out. I do eat a lot of probiotic yoghurt and I take a probiotic pill every morning so that may have something to do with it. I don't have a problem with gas either. I think things will settle down. I remember being really repulsed by the smell with my first ileostomy, but after about a month it just didn't really smell and the same thing happened with Wee Willie (my perminent stoma). After a while the initial gas and odour problems just went away. Personally I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone's poo smells, even the Queen. Good luck. One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Hi Kerianne,
I know exactly what you are going thru. I had my perm lleostomy about a year ago, and I still remember the first couple of months. WHOA ! When changing the pouch out, I had to wear a cloth mask, with musk perfume, or I would get sick. The dr told me , it was the medicine getting out of my system from the operation. It will get better. I told myself I'd never be able to stand the smell. Shell is most definately right on the Peroxide( See my post on peroxide). Lots of help for me on that one. You will get thru this, and the smell will go away. Supposedly, girls poo dosen't smell............... BEST!
