The skin surrounding my stoma is in a bad state. The skin is very red and open. Stings a lot. I just got a new loop ileostomy a few weeks ago. I never had any skin problems with my end ileostomy. I thought it would be the same with this end type. How can I get this skin to heal? I use the stoma powder on the skin when I change the flange. Can I keep the powder there and still get a seal on the flange? I always put the powder on and let it sit for a few minutes and then wipe it off. I thought the paste wouldnt seal good with powder under it. I think that at one point I cut the hole in the flange too big and it resulted in the skin around the stoma being exposed a bit. I think I'm doing better now and am getting the flange tighter to the stoma. Now if I can just get this skin to heal.

Jeffery,
Stoma powder is great for weeping skin but don't wipe it off. Either wet it with a wet finger or spray your barrier spray on it. Then put your bag on. Also use some type of barrier ring to help absorb fluids to keep it off the skin between bag changes.

Hi Jeffrey,
I have been struggling with skin probs too. Calamine lotion dabbed on and dried before you apply your wafer is good. Other ostomates find this really good to. I use an eakin seal, also, so I just put it around where the eaking seal is, then dry it and apply the wafer. Its just another form of barrier protection.

Jeffery,

In the beg. we had some problems with my sons skin as well. The first thing we did was ditch as many extra products as we could since so many of them have alcohol. We do not use paste, barrier wipes, glues etc.... We only use Alkare (convatec) adhesive remover wipe as they have non irritating alcohol in them. I put a very small amount of powder right around the edge of his stoma only and blow off the excess. I then put an eakin directly onto his skin followed by the wafer.
When he did have a time with some very excortiated skin around his stoma I took a tip from Shaz's site. Get some maalox or mylanta. Original flavor only as mint will sting. Let the bottle sit for a while and then uncap and pour off as much of the clear liquid as you can from the top. Dab some of the thicker white stuff on your skin and let dry and then proceed as normal. Obviously using this you may not get as good of wear time as you may with intact skin but I swear to you it healed my sons skin so fast it was crazy.
Good luck and hope your skin is feeling better soon.

I had the same problem. After my first surgery, I had an end ostomy and did fine. After my second, I was left with a loop ostomy as well as "indentation" in my belly around the stoma. My ostomy nurse said to use coloplast plugs to fill in those grooves and that helped the ring to fit closer to my skin. She also said to use a little powder on the irritated skin and dab it with my skin prep pad and to repeat this procedure 3-4 times. Then I put on the ring, the appliance, etc. I hope this helps you. Oh, and I was very careful not to eat spicy foods (although I CRAVED them!) as this only irritated the skin that was being exposed to the waste.

I use stoma powder with a 3M non-irritating barrier / adhesive spray and an eakin seal.
Strip, clean, dry, spray, wait about a minute, use powder, let set and loosely wipe, spray again, wait, add eakin then wafer.
Sounds complicated, but its easy to get the hang of & it works well.
Good luck!

As we grow older our skin start to become dry and wrinkles starts to appear. My skin is very oily and there are lots of pimples in my face. I don't take any drugs and I am just 19 years old. I am planning to consult with facial treatment center like lifestyle lift. I don't take any drugs and I quit to eat junk food. I also used some cosmetic product, but it did not work. These days I am seeking a solution. Do you have any suggestions for me? Help me please.

Skin problems mostly starts from teen age so we need to take care of that from that time only. The most important we should follow to protect our skin is our diet which must be healthy food.
