Hi there,
What is good to eat if I want to decrease my output...seems like I am emptying my bag a lot.
I am about 20 pounds underweight and lacking energy so I have been trying to eat more but it seems to end up in the bag.
Thanks
David

Hi David,

On the jpouch home page, there is a dietary guidelines link that you can click on. I copied this list from there. Hope this helps!

• applesauce

• bananas

• boiled rice, pasta

• cheese

Yeah, I had that list printed out and brought it with me to the hospital. I was just wondering if there was any other foods people eat would help. I thought after the surgery I could eat most anything...turns out most of the foods I like are either too spicy, too veggie or too greasy... too bad.
At least cold Pop Tarts and popsicles give me no problems Cool

Your way early still... body adjusting and going to take a bit. In time some foods will help but going to take some time for it to work. Take your time and soon enough you will be rehooked

Bagels and rice seem to really help. What has your doctor said about fiber and/or bowel slowing medications? I'm assuming you have a loop ileostomy? If so, it's the nature of the thing - a pooping maniac. If you can add something like Metamucil wafers or imodium/lomotil it might quiet things down.

The next thing to do is to add ONE new food at a time and give it a chance to react to your system. If it doesn't work right now it may work later.

The other thing you can do is eat salty foods like pretzels or other foods. You can also add salt to your foods - even the things you're drinking. Some of your nausea or lack of appetite might be because of a bit of dehydration. Adding salt will make you drink more. You can also try Hydralyte - it's really great for replacing electrolytes and also will help with the nausea.

It sounds like you're still doing very well!

I have a loop and I think it is a pooping machine. Haven't had to call the doc because it is not really nausea, just a sour stomache and bad taste left after eating.
My problem is that I feel great (gained 6 pounds in the last 10 days) and then I tend to overeat at a meal or eat the wrong stuff. Jason, I will take it a little slower... Taco Bell or Pad Thai will just have to wait a couple more weeks Cool
Glad to hear loop ileos are "pooping" machines and that it is normal to go so much.
It is great to feel great again!
Thanks for the help
David

Ahhhh, overeating at meals - because you can. I'm afraid that if you were a coloned person you might have problems from overeating and eating the wrong stuff. So all-in-all you're doing perfectly well. Gaining 6 pounds in 10 days is pretty amazing. Of course, with some of us, eating is tres important and we take it seriously. And it shows. (Something else to look forward to.....)

BTW - pad thai (vegetarian) goes right through my 17-year old pouch but that doesn't stop me from eating Thai. The best food on the planet.

How important is eating or should I care? I just had my loop ilo on sept4th. I had major scar tissue from 1st surgury & my pelvis was real small for a man so it was an 8 hour surgury! With 1st surgery I ate anything I pleased and have done so with this! Don't know anyone who deals with these things & recently found web sight. Scheduled for hook up around Oct 15th! Main problem I'm having is leakage due to a hunched over stoma with mouth pionting down at skin level! My stools are mainly all liquid. I'm on a narc in place of imodium but so far not helping!

Dave,

Loop-Ileo's are little monsters. I have had one for a year now and it just go’s and go’s. But with time the output does become thicker.

One thing you should look at is the sugar in the liquids you drink. I notice more than anything, sugary drinks fly right through me. Things like soda, Gatorade, and such. If you are taking in a lot of sugary drinks your output will be fast and furious. Drink water and lots of it!

Another thing to think about is to eat small meals several times a day. I usually eat 6 – 7 times a day. That slowed my output too.

Now is a good time to get into good “J-Pouch” eating habits. When you get connected over-eating is a very bad thing (you’ll know why when you do it…). I can understand where you are and how much you want that weight back, give it time, you have been through a lot it will come back. With the small meals, lots of water, and exercise I’ve put back on all of the weight I lost.

I am new to the group and wanted to share a tidbit that my GI doc shared to slow down the flow of drainage...
She said to eat two whole wheat sandwiches made with creamy peanut butter and Fluff (the one with the blue lid only that people use to make fudge). She said it works for most of her patients. Haven't had the need to try it yet but for what it is worth...

Hi

Peanut Butter is good-on an english muffin or that potato bread.
I also eat a LOT of rice

And to slow output-try:
Gamma Oryzanol capsules
Apple Pectin Capsules
Both MUST be in capsule form to slow output

Good Luck
