I am having tons of trouble with my bag leaking. I have a temp loop. My stoma is half in half out and pretty much flush with the skin. Right now I'm using a covex wafer with a barrier ring. but I'm still getting less than 3 days out of it. I went on a site that had paste for all kinds of things and I order a jar of paste has anyone done this?? Does it work?? I just would like to be able to have my wafer last 4-5 days before I have to change it.

Depending on your stoma, 4-5 days just might not be realistic. I have a perm ileo and I have to change every 3 days to keep my skin healthy.

THe loop ileo can be challenging because the output is usually very watery - are you doing anything to thicken things up? Immodium or lomotil? Metamucil? Thickening foods like peanut butter, rice, bananas, etc...

Also, have you tried different brands of wafer? Some people do better with different products. You can try paste with the Eakin seals, but if your stoma is half in half out you probably shouldn't try paste alone (of course try it if you want but you won't have the added propping up from the Eakin).

Hello!

I have a temp loop right now too and I used the barrier rings for my temp, but I found it didn't work as well for my temp loop, so I use the Eakin Cohesive Seals Jill talked about. They are very similar to the barrier rings except it has a sticker & thicker texture....works much better to prevent leaks for me. Ask your stoma nurse or ostomy supplier about them, I'm sure they will know, they are pretty common. Good luck!

Hi Jessica,

I too have problems with thicker than normal stool and find that Convatec's moldable durahesive convex wafers work best for me. I don't need any pastes or seals with them because they really do mold to every contour. You can order free samples from their web site.

Good luck and keep us posted.

3 days really isn't that bad for wear time. Have you tried an ostomy belt? I increased my wear time from 2 to 3 days to 5 to 6 days after using a holister ostomy belt.
Good luck and take care.

Hi Jessica, I have been using Eakin seals and have had good luck with them. I have an end ileo so that might make a difference. Anyway, at first I was just using a Hollister two piece wafer and that lasted only two days, then tried the Eakin seals(Hollister two piece w/eakins), now I can go six days till I have to do a complete change. Wishing you good luck.

Ok things got from bad to worst. Now I'm not even getting a day out of them. EEK what is going on???

Shell I went to the site you said to and found that Arizona has a supplier. I'm going to go tomorrow and get me some of them.

I no longer have an Ostomy or stoma nurse. They did the 1-2-3 your out of here with me. They did not even see me change my appliance.
So I'll try the Moldable wafers first then I'll try the Eakin's seals. Who makes the Eakin's seals??

Edited to put in Who not how

Also I use the holister Ostomy belt all the time. Otherwise it feels like it's going to fall off.

Hi

I had many problems too-check my old posts-was tearing my hair out...Jason's step by step worked for me-
*I liked Smith & Nephew cement-which is discontinued and hard to find-
I suggest trying the Nu-Hope cement (do not let name scare you-is not super glue-made for the skin Smiler } I am trying it now and still working on getting it down.

Also, try Karaya powder as a first step-great for weeping/irritated skin from constant changes and actually holds better with red, etc skin.

I get an average of 4 days between changes.
However,
everyone has rough days, I had to change 2 days in row this week, one a bad leak, but I kept cool and no-one noticed ( I coach my son's football team and took a big hit behind the tackling dummy).
Keep experimenting, you'll hit something that works for you
-Like Shell, I experimented & now mix 2 brands/products

Best of luck!

Jessica, you said your ostomy nurse did the 1-2-3 you are outta here - did you mean a visiting nurse?

Ostomy nurses are generally associated with a hospital or medical center and you can see them any time. I see mine once a year if I'm not having problems but can get one to see me within a week's notice. If in fact, it was an ostomy nurse who left you on your own, call your local medical centers and see if you can find another one.

CoachE: so the cement works for you. I tried a glue and it made the leak worst. URO-BOND IV was the name of it.

JillM: the home health nurse was the one that did the 1-2-3 your outta here. I did not know about the ostomy nurse at the hospital.

Jessica,

Like Shell I use Convatec's Duradheasive Convex, but I also use Hy-Tape to "frame" the wafer. It gives it a solid bond to my skin and is very waterproof. I went from 2-3 days wear up to 6 days. I usually chage earlier than that to keep my skin healthy, but at least the leaks have stopped.

Hope you find your solution soon!

Jessica - I have a perm ileo like $6Mill and Shell. I use the Convatec moldable durahesive skin barrier with hydocolloid flexible collar. That works really well for me. I also use a half of an eakin seal (my ostomy nurse taught me this) formed into a ring which I put snugly around Mr. Stoma. Put the eakin on around the stoma first, then press on the barrier ring. I find that if I forget to wipe with the no-sting barrier wipe, it doesn't stick as well.

I can easily go for 6 days with my appliance. I have fairly liquidy stool and do not use a belt. Instead I just tuck my pouch into the front of my panties. This works perfect for me since I'm so skinny. I like this method because I still get to wear my bikini type panties and the bag doesn't get in the way.

I don't ever use extra tape on the barrier unless I've just changed my appliance and taken a bath and the tape has lifted a bit. Normally I find that if I do a good job of putting on the barrier ring, then it will last AT LEAST 6 days.

Try to find an Ostomy nurse you can go to for assistance. Those folks are terrific. I just love mine. She always has great tips and really helped me get used to wearing the whole thing and finding the perfect fit.

Good luck to you. Hope all the advice here helps you. - Cat

my thing is I have no insurance for this month (sept) so I can't go to the ostomy nurse or call the doctor. I do have an appointment set up for Oct 1st. By then I hope to have this thing under control, or else I'm going to beg for my "takedown" sooner than the end of Nov.
