Hi all,
Just the last couple changes I've noticed a spreading redness around the stoma, particularly below the stoma. I ordered some 3M No-sting barrier film wipes, which I love. I didn't get the redness until I stopped using the 3M and used the junky ones my insurance covers. Everything is so itchy and burns. I'm using Eakins under my coloplast appliance and trying to cover the red area so that nothing gets to it. Any magic tactics or products I'm unaware of? Thanks so much, Cheryl May 7, 2007: Step 1 May 29: Bowel Obstruction June 5, 2007: Step 2, take-down April 8, 2008: Perm. Did you try Stomahesive powder? and 3M no sting liquid bandage (target, wal-mart, etc...)
Good luck and make sure your wafer isn't cut tooooooo large. Les |

I don't know how to use stomahesive powder, what do you do with it??? The liquid bandage is a great idea, I think I will pick some up tomorrow! Thanks!

Cher,
A few ideas until Shell and Jill have a chance to answer... You can sprinkle the Stomahesive powder on the red areas (don't worry if you get it on the stoma), then brush off the excess. One ET nurse told me to daub it with a barrier wipe or use your 3m spray, let it dry; then you can do extra coats of powder, barrier wipe, etc. (A Cleveland Clinic ET nurse said you can just do the powder.) Then put on your Eakin seal as usual. If the area is really itchy, it might be a yeast infection. Are there little red bumps? If it's yeast, Nystatin powder works better. I hope you get it under control soon. Anjuli |

Cheryl,
Good to see you back here, and I'm so glad you're doing better! I had skin issues with my loop ileostomy, and the ET nurses at Rush had me use stoma powder all the time. I just used the 3M wipes (and you're right; they're so much better than the ones my insurance would pay for, too!) around the stoma, and then dusted the powder all over the area and gently brushed off the excess. The powder worked wonders with my skin! Terri |
