I have a perm ileo and shower and swim just like Shell and JasonPa. Every time I shower I just unsnap my bag and let the water hit Mr. Stoma but the barrier stays on from 3-5 days. I just did a 5 day run and all was fine. The only thing that happens with my barrier, is the tape starts to lift along the side where my incision line is located. But, the wafer is stuck solid.
I think Jason his the nail though, its more of a trust/mental issue at first. Now, I'm totally comfortable changing my appliance. I used to freak out everytime. Now I know how to handle Mr. Stoma and we don't have any problems during the change out. I can even take a bath without everything on if I do it at the right time of day. I don't use the mini-bags during intimate moments. I use the closed end with bag liners, so I just pull out liner, snap on fresh bag & liner, fold it up and tape it down so there is no movement at all. Its no different than if I had a bandage taped to me. My hubby doesn't even notice. He claims I'm still beautiful, how cute. The appliance is really sturdy. Those babies really stay stuck on through all sorts of activities. If you think about it, they stay stuck on under our clothes against warm skin in hot and humid weather. And, don't try to tell me we don't sweat under all that. There is NO WAY I'd stick that in Mr. Stoma. I think that would really piss him off. Talk about "thar he blows"! I keep the same one on all the time... its big but hides well and you cant see it in my swim suit (not that I cared if ppl say the wafer top everyone knows I have it).. I am not sure of the size but its prob 10 inches long. I was "LUCKY" that when I went to my end Illoe, I knew some things I would want to change and was able to do that. Mine is now on the left side and some other things to hide well
On a side note... I also play check ice hockey and its holds well Jason - Pa statie7104@yahoo.com Step 1 Jan 06 Step 2 March 06 Spleen & Gallbladder June 06 Pouch Disconnect / End Illeo May 07 |

My surgeon dilated my stoma after surgery, and it was a wierd sensation, and the thought of sticking something into myself makes me weak. I just went on vacation and went swimming with the regular bag I always use, and had no problems at all. I was nervous the first day, but when I saw how good it stayed, I was fine the rest of the week.

Stoma caps, etc are definitely only for colostomates (those who can irrigate) and will NOT work for ileostomates as our stomas output at least 95% of the time and we can do ourselves a serious damage if we use them (that's if they'll work, more likely the output will just push the thing out).
I'm with the others. I use a one piece midi sized bag and swim, sleep, have sex, etc all with the one sized bag. Never in 31 years has anyone ever said they can see my bag through my bathing costume. Since I have a one piece bag I can't change bag sizes at will and have never needed to anyway. You might like to try a woman's tube top but wrap it around your waist (over your bag) during intimate moments. That will keep everything in place so you don't have to worry about your bag flopping about Another tip: for sweating under the bag, buy a baby's bib. Tie it around your bag and stoma and have the main part between your bag and your skin - it will absorb all the sweat. As for showering. On change days (for me, once a week) I shower totally naked (without a bag). If there's any output it just goes down the drain anyway. The rest of the time I just shower with my bag on and towel dry it when I get out of the shower. Body heat dries off any excess moisture within a few minutes. Normal weartime is between 3 - 4 days. Some people get more, some get less. You'll soon find out how long you can go before changing the wafer. Remember, if it itches, change it! Good luck. Yes a wafer is the same as a flange. I use Durahesive rather than Stomahesive because they are designed more specifically for the high liquid output of an ileostomy. I get 4-5 days out of mine (could go longer but prefer not to) whereas when I tried the Stomahesive I could barely last a day before springing a leak. Hope this helps One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |
