Haven't been here in a while. I recently developed what my Ostomy Nurse calls "granulomas" on the skin around the stoma. Does anyone else get these and if so, how do you resolve them?

My nurse and I do not believe its a moisture issue because we checked that and I'm not having leakages. The granulomas are painful and cause the whole ileostomy area to throb in pain.

We are currently using silver nitrate sticks to get rid of the granulomas I have now. Problem is I keep gtting new ones. The GI doc has no idea. Perhaps a dermotologist would be the right kind of help. I get skin lesions on my neck at the same time I develop the granulomas. Its the same sort of thing that used to happen when I had pouchitis.

Any ideas other folks have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cat Kelley

Hi Cat,

I have suffered from these myself when my peristomal ulcers were healing. It's an overgrowth of new tissue and mine were also treated with silver nitrate. I actually found that the treatment with the silver nitrate is very painful and caused more pain than the actual granulomas.

The fact that you are getting them on your neck at the same time leads me to believe that this is some sort of IBD extraintestinal manifestation so I'm not sure why your GI seems so puzzled. However, as he doesn't seem to have any answers then I think you should see that skin specialist.

I hope you get this resolved soon. Keep us posted.

Take care Smiler

Hi Shell - Thanks so much for your response. I'm so glad you are still with the group. I was sad to see that Jason PA has left the group. He always had such uplifting and positive comments.

Thanks for your response. Do you still get the granulomas? Did your docs determine that they were related to a extraintestinal issue? If so, how did you treat the problem?

I sent you a PM asking you pretty much the same stuff so if you'd prefer to respond to this thread that's okay. I just want to know what causes those nasties and how to prevent them. They re extremely painful and actually cause me to limp.

Thanks again for your response. - Cat

Hi Cat
My daughter called me to tell me that she is having a very bad irritation around her stoma. It is very red. I dont know if the are granulomas because i cant see them, she lives in Florida and I live in Georgia. She has a temp ileostomy due to UC and has Chrons. She is been treated with Humira. She is been trying to get a hold of one of the nurses at the hosptal but it seems hard. I dont want her to get worst that she has to go to the hospital. Any recommendations. Bless you
