I'm 8 weeks post op, and I've been getting this stinging around my stoma whenever I lay on my side or lean over when sitting. At first I thought maybe the wafer was too tight, but then I changed it and gave the stoma a bit of room, but I still have stinging. Could it be stitches maybe? If so, when will it go away?

Hi Chelsea,
I had stinging at first and still do sometimes. Usually now though it's when my stool is too thick. If you know that your appliance isn't leaking then it's probably just the settling down period. Even at 8 weeks post op you are still in the early stages of recovery and damaged nerve endings are still recovering. It does get better with time. Just keep an eye on your skin to make sure that the stinging isn't caused by leaking. I find the best therapy is to get in the shower without my wafer and aim the shower at the skin around my stoma. It feels really good and helps with the circulation. Hope you are doing well otherwise after your rather rough start. Take care One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

Ah I would get in the shower but I can't get my arm nor my butt wet so that is not feasible
The skin around my stoma looks great so I guess I'll just have to go with the nerves explanation. Thanks Shell CHELSEA Perm Ileo March 11th!!! Chelsea,
I'm experiencing the same thing. I don't sweat it because I know it's not leaking. I usually get it when I lay down for bed, especially when I flip from side to side, and my stoma starts going. I think what's happening is the eakins seal is on there so good, there isn't much flexibility when the stoma starts pulling on the skin around the stoma... that's my story, anyway. I'd say, as long as you know you're not having any leakage, and you're not choking your stoma off, don't sweat it- it will get better, ESPECIALLY when you can take all that stuff off Thursday, and let that hot water sooth the skin around it! //Todd Step 1 - 2/8/05 Step 2 - 5/10/05 Reversal back to permanent ileostomy - 3/11/08 ** I Love Food. ** AIM/YahooIM: Br8knitOFF |

Hi
I'm at 11 months with the perm ileo. Still occasionally get some stinging. Usually within the 1st day and when i get near to change time. Either I am subconsciously ignoring it or it has minimized; probably some of each. Bear with it-everything is more annoying in the first month+ home. Good luck |
