If there's one thing I've learned from having an ileostomy it's EMPTY the darn bag before it gets too full!
Yeah, I know that our ostomy nurses tell us to empty it when it's about one-third full, and I know that I should do exactly that, but you know how it is..."I can run just one more errand before I empty it." "I'll bet I can go another 30 minutes before I have to empty it." Anyway, it's good advice to empty it sooner rather than later. If you don't let the bag get too full, it's not going to tug as much on the wafer and increase the likelihood of a leak. Plus, if you don't let the bag get too full, there's not so much output swishing around in there, having the chance to make contact with the seal around the stoma. Not exactly brilliant advice, but just thought I'd mention it for anyone who's having leakage problems. There are lots of reasons that we get leaks, and this is an easy one to eliminate. Diagnosed with Chronic Ulcerative Colitis in 1986. First-step of 2-step j-pouch surgery January 9, 2006. Takedown June 16, 2008. |
