My husband has an ileo since June. He has at times a foul smelling tannish liquid from his rectum. It is usually mucous consistency. Is this normal?

Mucous discharge from the rectum is normal. I don't remember it smelling bad, but I had it from step 1 until I had my takedown. Very annoying but usually harmless. Most doctors forget to tell you that it will happen.

Hi
I use to get the discharge as Rosie said it is normal, however my surgeon told me if it started to smell then you may have an infection. Maybe get it checked out by a dr.

MJL,
I had it and it smelled so foul that I would cry every time I had to change the pad....at the time my k pouch was leaking too and I remember thinking that this was worse than pre pouch because I hand gunk leaking from both ends...mine was accompanied by the most awful cramps too like my colon was trying to prolapse out of me...not unusual at all apparently.
Sharon

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Hey, My doc said this is normal, and the only way around it is to get butt closure surgery. So I just put up with it. But if it really smelly you may want to get it checked for infection.

I have had an ileostomy since 2006 and the discharge. My doctor said the discharge is normal and he prescribed Canasa suppositories. They seem to make the discharge a bit less annoying.

You are how you act, not just what you believe.

Diagnosed UC 1982
Ileostomy 2006 - Never felt better.
