I am new to the ostomy and have not been able to keep the flange on good. it developes leaks. there is a small area that ie loose. Can it be repaired? Right now , I used some Hy-Tape & Hypafix until I get an answer. I have an wound healing right to it so it is a pain to change. Any help will be appreciated.

if you have a wafer that is lifting off at the edges i don't see why you couldn't just dab a little glue under it....but if it is leaking like stool leaking under the wafer there is no point trying to save it because the stool will burn the skin and if it gets really irritated it could start oozing and then next thing you know, no wafer will stick to it.

take care

I have never been able to salvage a wafer after it started leaking.

I had a wound after my stoma revision, The ostomy nurse said I should use an eakin seal every time until the wound healed. They said the ingredients in the seal would help it heal. It worked great. Got 4 days wear time, and longer after the wound quit weeping.

Best of Luck to you.

I had that problem when I first got my second ostomy. I find if I stretch my skin fairly taught, before putting it on, it seems to hold better. The skin prep pads help make the wafer stick better also. Good luck... Smiler

I feel the skin prep wipes help because they fell sticky, but I have been told by several ostomy nurses and patients, not to use them that they will cause a it not to seal as good. I have been using them so far, so tommorrow, I will try it without the skin prep.
I'll let you know how it works out.
Thanks for the advise.

Barbie,
in the way of information-
If I get any poo/output on my skin under my wafer I have quite a bit of skin irritation so I have to give up and change the wafer. When I started with this whole ileostomy business a year ago it was overwhelming. It turns out that different products work a little differently for different people. Most of the ostomy supply companies will send you samples of their products. If you don't know (I didn't) what those companies even are look on a site like Edgepark or Bryam medical supplies and see what's there.
Anyway- if the tape part of my wafer peels up a bit around the edge I just tape it down with non-latex tape. But if it seems to be in the sticky part then I have to take the whole thing off. It'd be nice if there was some other way than pulling the whole thing off to check to see how bad the leak is but...
We I was first released from the hosp. they had me on clear one piece drainable bags. I have since learned to hate them but understand why they start you there. Clear- you can see if there is something horrible wrong with the stoma. One piece- because it does actually hurt a little right after surgery to press bag onto a flange. etc...
I saw another of your posts- I have to use the barrier wipes or my tends to freak out. I haven't had any problems with adhesion. I just make sure it is dry before I slap the wafer on. It is some times a little "tacky" to the touch but that still seems fine.

It all seems impossible right now. I think it will get better for you. It's just that horrible un-bypass-ible period of figuring it out. Ugh.
Best of everything to you.
L.
