How far does your stoma stick out? I had two different stomas during my life so far and the first one I think stuck out about half an inch, the the other one was so flat, you really couldn't even measure it. I got much more sore on that one.
Oh yes, and how big is your stoma? Just wondering. xo♥, Win ~Provide free rice to hungry people by playing this simple word game~ Click here!! V http://www.freerice.com/ |

The one I have now is a loop ileo, and it's almost flush with the skin. Using convex wafers along with a barrier ring has helped the irritation for me. I think my end ileo stuck out about half an inch.

I have a loop. Lying flat on my back it sticks up maybe a quarter inch or more. I have a bit of a belly right now, so when I am up it's about flush with the skin. I'm use convex wafers. I'm still evaluationg samples from all companies though.
OH, you should start thinking of a name for your stoma right now Win The Cup comes home to Hockeytown! |

Mine sticks out about 3/4 of an inch and the opening is pointed in the best position. My diameter is still shrinking, I think in the hospital it was 1 1/2 inches and now it's between 1 inch and 1 1/8 inches. It's been about a month since my end ileo surgery and no skin irritations or problems!!!

Wee Willie is rather long and thin even for an end ileostomy and he points down (hence his name
His predecessor was a loop and a nightmare to keep a wafer on even with a convex, but that was 12 years ago and I think that ostomy appliances have really evolved a lot since then. Jason and Bill.... Well I think I can safely say that Wee Willie wins so far! One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

WARNING!!!!! picture attached of stoma and incision. This is about 14 days post-op. Stoma is 7/8" in diameter and about 1" long. Have to use Coloplast light convex 15606 so I won't get leaks.

LOL Big D, I honestly haven't even THOUGHT about names yet!! Maybe a good one will come to me after it's been there a while.
Just wondering Jason, why do you like the longer one more? I really couldn't say not ever having a "long" stoma but I think that would be kind of uncomfortable rubbing against your jeans, shirt, ect. I also worry if something ever hits your stoma. I think that would really hurt!! When I had my stomas, I hated the senstation of ANYTHING touching it (except me, of course Shell, I have heard of stomas that telescope and retract and neither of my other stomas have done that either. LOL, I remember laying in my hospital bed watching this video that my ostomy nurse gave me and my family to watch right after I got my first stoma, and the lady's stoma on the video retracted! That was a big surprise to the 9-year-old that I was and I started saying things like: "Ewwwwwwwww!! That's so gross why is she touching it like that?! Ew, and it's so long!! OH MY GOSH" My mom made my dad take off the video since it was 'upsetting' me. LOL, just a flash back I had xo♥, Win ~Provide free rice to hungry people by playing this simple word game~ Click here!! My loop wasnt as long and had a bit of a weird angle... it was good but a bit flush sometimes and had to watch it a bit more.
This one is no where near flush - (doent bother my in clothes) and just seems to manage the output much better (though its an end not loop now) Also, going to an end illeo, I was able to place the ostomy where i want and make some corrections that I didnt like with the first one.. only thing i didnt expect was for it to be on my left side now not right! As for hurting my stoma... I dont know it has taken a few great kicks and headbuts from my nephews (2,6) and its fine.. I also play ice hockey and not a issue... seatbelt doensnt bug me and so on.. I think once i just ignored things and didnt worry about them the issue and mental things were gone... I really dont think about it at all - never. Through this journey i had three ileos
1st was so strange, the Dr. instead of make it loop he made me two, the normal one for the output and the second that was attached directly to the pouch and its out put was mucous only, i hated this one the most no wafers was working with it , i spent with it a crazy 10 weeks. and both of them was 3 or 4 mm out 2nd was a loop but it was under skin, same as k-pouch 3rd was 1.5 cm post the surgery and then i noticed that it's getting taller now it's about 3 cm !!! is this normal ? Should i expect more ? |

Hi Winnie I think it's fun to name stomas.
My first ET nurse made me name my loop ileo so I named it Stinky b/c all it did the first couple days was pass gas. A month ago I converted to a permanent ileo and I named it A.C., originally A.C. was short for Air Compressor b/c that's all it did was pass gas (again) but now that's greatly decreased so now A.C. is short for Always Crappin'. I'm sure one will come to you when it's been there. A.C. works for me Scott |
