Is it okay to exercise and run?

Prior to going back to an ostomy, I used to enjoy running and exercising. It has been 10 months since I had my surgery I am considering doing a 10 K run. I am concerned about how my stoma will hold up if I start running again. Anyone have feedback on exercising with a stoma, and what I should be careful of?
Thanks,
Ann

Shouldn't be a problem. Let your body tell you.

In one of my last ostomy newsletters they had a spoof medical section in which a "doctor" said the heart only has so many "beats" in it. Excersizing will make the beats run out fast and contribute to premature death.

I wish I could find it...it really was quite funny. Have fun running.. Smiler

Have a fabulous day!

I exercise 3 times a week plus swim and hottub. The only issues I have is when I get really really hot then the flange may become loose after a few days.
During the winter I can stay 4-5 days during the heat of summer when I am out in the heat I change more often.

Thanks for the feedback! I started on the treadmill this week. It felt so good. The first day I got on it, I found myself holding my palm over my stoma while I was running. I am so afraid of doing too much and causing a prolapse, (although I haven't had any problems with that since my last revision surgery.) The second day went better. I was able to get a good run going for the first mile. Feels great getting back to running. I find the Ostomy Secret underwear to be a life saver while exercising.
My 10 K is on May 7, which is also my 35th Birthday. I think it will be a great accomplishment to finish on that day. A sort of celebration of getting back to a healthy self!
