I had a colectomy march 13th and now have a temp ileostomy. SInce the surgery I have a weird feeling when something is passing through the stoma. It's hard to explain- it is like a contraction or spasm and then pain ( kind of) more like discomfort. Then the stoma is sore. I have normal output applesauce consistency and besides surgical pain around the lap sites and bikini incision, no other problems.
My question- Is this normal? It hasn't been 3 weeks since surgery. Could this be the stoma and the insides getting used to outputting?? Please any reassurances or suggestions would be appreciated UC diagnosed 2006 3 step Jpouch surgery 3/2009, 6/2009, 10/2009 Off meds but having recurring pouchitis |

You are still early in the recovery so it could just be the transition period. However, I have had my stoma for over 5 years and I can still feel some foods passing. It really depends on the consitancy. If it's really chunky it can still hurt to pass which is why I prefer my stools to be slightly looser. It was much more noticable in the early days though so you may find that you notice it less as time goes on.
On the other hand, if this is a new pain or sensation then I would mention it to your stoma nurse or doctor. Good luck and take care. One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

thanks Shell
I have had thicker output and that might be it. This morning I feel better. I am still going to call the nurse today. Thanks again.... UC diagnosed 2006 3 step Jpouch surgery 3/2009, 6/2009, 10/2009 Off meds but having recurring pouchitis |
