I tried a new product(new to me) the other day called stoma wipes made by safe n' simple. I was impressed by how well they worked. They removed the adhesive residue with no stinging and left my skin feeling clean. I was able to do a complete change mid day with a good seal and that was four days ago. These come in handy for those days when you are in a hurry and need a fast and easy way to clean the skin around the stoma. Another good thing is that these wipes are flushable.

I use the no-sting ostomy wipes too (though a different brand thats available here in the UK) and it's the only prep I use (apart from some non-greasy antiperpirent cream which I use in hot weather to prevent a sweat rash). They are great for getting rid of any left over residue from your last appliance as well as offering good skin protection.
I don't use any pastes or seals and am very much a "less is more" type of person. The more products you use under the wafer the less chance the wafer's adhesive and healing properties have of doing the job. It's great when you find a product that works for you isn't it? One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

I use soap and water too but the wipes also offer a good barrier if your skin is a little sensitive to the adhesive on the wafer without compromising the seal and healing properties. They are also great if you need to do an emergency wafer change where there is no sink (ie: a public toilet stall) and as they are individually wrapped they don't take a lot of space in your spare kit bag.
Jason, maybe you should be shaving a larger area before you apply your eakin ring. A full Brazilian perhaps? One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

I'm with Jason, soap and water in the shower. I use my fingernail to scrape any adhesive off the area around my stoma. I find that less irritating to my skin than all the wipes and preps. But, Shell, I like your thought about changes when there isn't a sink...maybe I should get some of these to keep on hand in case...

Smith & Nephew remover wipes works great for me and cavilon barrier spray(just spray and go) for protecting the skin under the flange.

Not to mention the adhesive that gets stuck to the tub after the fact...it's a real pain to clean up!

Well that's where a good adhesive removal product comes in handy.
When I'm doing my regular change at home I use an orange oil based medical adhesive remover to get rid of all the residue left over from my moldale wafer. It's kind and gentle on the skin and really does get rid of every bit of gunk. The only thing is that you really do need to make sure your skin is squeaky clean (this is why I also use soap) because the oil can hinder the adhesion of your new wafer. I've tried the regular adhesive removers but most contain alcohol and irritate my skin. Jason, you must have very hairy legs! Have you tried waxing? Hi Guys,
I use No Sting barrier Film by 3M,Cavilon (that is what we have here in Aust). They seem to be doing a good job so far, I have a little bag which I carry everything I need incase of an emergency, barrier film, extra bags and plates, scissors, tape, paste, tissues, stoma powder, some antibacterial hand gel and a couple of plastic bags. Amazing what you can put into a small supply bag, that I carry around with me no matter where i go. It has been almost 8 weeks since my surgery and things are going great, I am starting to forget about the Ostomy, till i get a reminder. Kam Total Collectomy 11/1991 Ileo-Anal Pouch & Ileostomy 11/2007 plus plenty of other surgery |

Kam, You'll really know that you've got to the stage of forgetting you have an ostomy when you forget to take your emergency supplies with you!
Wee Willie's now nearly 4 years old and the only time I take any spares with me is if I'm going on holiday or need to go off the island for more than a day. Otherwise I just trust in my system and go about my business never giving it a second thought. I've never had to do an emergency kit change anywhere other than at home and I've not had a leak in 3.5 years (touch wood). The key is to find a system you are confident in and a routine that works for you. One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

I only cart the kit with me when I go to my GP, not knowing if they need to look at the Stoma at all and when I got to hospital or travelling, around town I am confident, my hubby ask me if I need a pit stop before moving on the next ting on the agenda, or i just chuck it in the car incase we go somewhere longer than planned, I have enough gear in it for 3 changes almost 2 weeks

Oh Yeah, and like Kam I take a change with me if I'm seeing one of my doctors or if I have to stay in hospital overnight.
I'm still waiting for my ear op and the second procedure on my eye so I know I'll have to put a kit together in the next month or so. Jason, I really do hope that your pink tape is still ok in 10 years time, because if you're anything like me you'll have forgotten that you have it until you need it. I was clearing out some of my old handbags (purses to you lot on the other side of the Pond BTW, You should replace your entire kit at least every 3 months because they do go out of date. (I never practice what I preach! Happy New Year Everyone! One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |
