Has anyone with an ileostomy undergone a complete proctectomy? Did they remove your anal spincter muscles? Are you sewn shut below? Just wondering how it works? And if you are happy with the results. I have so much anal pain right now that this sounds amazing to me.

Rosie,
I have a k pouch and have had it for 32yrs...they did a proctocolectomy at stage 2...and yes they closed me up...been fine with the butt closed except that I still get occasional phantom pains (less and less as the yrs go by) and I still dream of going the normal way but the sphincter is gone and so is most of the pain...
My pouch is a wonder and when it works life is grand...Better than having a bag...if you need to know more about k pouches and butt closures post on the k pouch part of this forum.
Sharon

It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here....

Thank you Sharon. It is so nice that you are on this forum. You are so knowledgible and have a positive attitude. I have recently been in such pain that I am fantisizing about the K pouch and the relief of a complete proctectomy. I am going to start the process of finding a doctor, as I don't thnk I can wait a year like I was going to try to, life is just too miserable with this j pouch. Thank you for your valuable input. I'm sure I will have more questions in the future. Smiler
Thanks so much,
Rosie

Rosie,
Thank you so much...being positive is what keeps me alive and this k pouch is what keeps me going...if you have any questions just PM me and I will answer you directly...I am not familiar with K pouch surgeons in the U.S. because mine was done in Canada...but if you post the question or look it up on the site (list of k pouch surgeons in the US) I am sure that you will fine 1...I have no opinion on th BCIR but was considerting one until I re-found my kpouch surgeon...I know that there is a CC in Fl as well as NY or PHilly or something like that but that the Mayo may no longer do them...there is also someone in Cal doing them so check it out and if you don't have to wait then go for it as soon as you can....
Good luck
Hugs
Sharon

I had colostomy, plus removal of my rectum. I also get the phantom pressure, feeling like I have to pass gas sometimes. It's a little funny having a closed butt, but I definitely got used to it. I never had a pouch or anything like that, or pain. I had a stricture that used to make my control very tough. I never realized how much stress that really was until I had my bag, and could go extended time without going to the bathroom.
