does anyone use an ostomy bag for a fistula? do you use an Eakin seal with it? How do you keep it away from the wound? It seams to get gooy and spread into the open wound area. any ideas?
Thanks, Barbara |

Barbara, I used an ostomy bag for an abdominal fistula that was in my vertical incision. It was so close to the stoma I had to trim both wafers. I was lucky to get more than one day before I had to change them both. I used part of an Eakin seal with the fistula wafer.

I use the Hollister #88800 small bag without tape around the flange, because the fistula is now the size of a pea. Just make sure the area is very dry before you place it on. I use a small piece of Eakin seal also. A hair dryer helps dry it and after it is in place heats the seal better to stick. After I put on the ileostomy bag, I trim a piece of waterproof tape to go on top of the tape around the flange where the fistula bag will overlap. I trim each only very little and make sure there is som skin in between the two flanges.
I know have a bandage so the red area that is still healing will stay dry. If it heals all the way , then I will switch to the small Hollister Pouchkins #3796 bag, if it is still draining allot. I hope this helps, Barbara |
