looking for advice I had step 1 on march 22nd went through with step 1 and 2 last yr and in 06 so my stomach is pretty messed up anyhow not knowing I was gonna have step1 thought was just got be a hernia surgery they did not mark so the stoma ended up on top of the wound and the wound is open again...needless to say i'm having to change my wafers daily sometimes more than once a day.

I know very bad, the first time I had setp1 had problems but still got 3-4 days out of mine.

I have tried convatec? 1 piece , 2 pieces 2 piece with belts and modable wafers non modable. I do use a e-seal. The best luck so far was my old supplies which where the 2 piece modable but there an old style modable not sure if they can even get it but they still dont last long enough but better than the rest . I end up cutting some of the wafer off as it goes in the wound if I do not..and I tape alot of the wafer had to do some of this last time also but this time seems worse.

Any advice from some of you experts would be great I know fairly well how to work these most of the time but i'm running out of ideas.

Just looking for advice on one of these to stay like a trick that i'm not doing et nueses been trying and no provail and my skin is very irrtrated.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff,
Have you tried any Hollister products? I used the 2 piece Hollister New Image, the FlexTend Skin Barrier with Floating Flange was great. The round adhesive part of the wafer is a bit smaller than others, but then there is a kind of 'tape' material that extends from it as well. It worked for me because I had creases on my stomach when I sat down which went through the wafer area, and the bigger wafers would kind of buckle and led to leaks. My stoma was also close to my belly button and the other wafers would extend over my belly button and would get loose really quickly in that area. I used an eakin seal as well which helped. I hope you find something that works, having leaks and changing your system everyday gets old really fast!

I'll walk this winding road into the great unknown.

Hi Jeff,

Do you take your wafer off in the shower and let the water run over it for a while? I think it really helps my skin most of the time I don't even use soap just let the water go over the skin.

Also do you where a support belt? I where a 4 inch wide Nu-hope belt that really keeps the wafer on my skin especially when I sit down. Sometimes my stomach will crease at the top or bottom of the wafer and the belt really keeps everything close to my skin.

I know you will be able to get something figured out before step 2!

Hi Jeff,

Not sure if your wound is meant to stay open to drain but if not then the following might be something to try.

I suffered from some really serious ulcers (pyoderma gangranosum) around Wee Willie shortly after my operation to remove my j-pouch which made it impossible to keep a wafer on for more than a few hours. There was no healthy skin between the ulcers and the stoma and the ulcers leaked continually.

My good friend (who is also my stoma nurse) finally found a solution by applying a piece of Duoderm over the ulcers and then putting the wafer on top of that. Duoderm is a very thin hydrocoloid wound dressing and will stay in place even when the wound underneath is wet. This gave my wafer something to stick to so that it gave the ulcers a chance to heal without stool getting into them.

I had to pack the ulcers with a product called Promogran which helped speed up the healing process before applying the Duoderm so that is something else that might help you.

You can get both products on-line. Here's the links:

Hope this helps.

thanks for advice far as that shell ya its meant to drain and they tried that and the wound leaked righ through it . main problem is the wound leaks real bad, where the stoma is causing the wafer not to stick.

Pixie gonna ask see if insurance covers it and to try it out.

SJ ya I let it run in shower and the area really clean the problem is as I said above.

Mainly wound drainning bad right at stoma cauing the wafer to come up that's why they rtied what shell said and it just leaked through this wound leaks really really bad.

ET nurses are stunned atm and they say they hoping the wound stops drining so bad atleast slows up then they can work with it better .

Everything couldnt be in the worst spot..

ty for advice gonna try and few of what you guys said and keep trying no choice right?? heheh

Jeff,

I don't know if this will help in your situation, but you could ask your ostomy nurse for a sample of a preemie pouch, to use to collect the drainage from the wound. I have a fistula that drains from my incision. It's very close to the stoma & keeps the whole area so wet the ileostomy wafers were only sticking for a few hours. The preemie pouch is not perfect; I have to trim it & the regular wafer so they don't cover the fistula opening, but it has helped immensely.

I also started wearing a belt, which keeps the larger wafer on even when the tape is soaked through.

I hope you find something that works for you.

Jeff,
When you change everything out, are you using soap on your skin around the stoma?

Make SURE you're not using any soaps with any kind of skin softeners or moisturizers- will lead to trouble every time.

I use Ivory, and makes everything stick like glue. Prior to my ostomy nurse giving me that tidbit of advice after my step 1, I had ALL sorts of problems with leaks and stuff coming unstuck.

..and like Pixie, I use the Hollister New Image 2-piece products- they're great! They also seem to be much more flexible around the areas that crease on my belly too, reducing the risk of it popping off.
