Hi...It sounds like you may have an ill fitting wafer. Put a call into your ostomy nurse. My wafer is tight enough that output really doesn't touch my skin. I think there are also skin barriers out there that might help. Smiler

Have a fabulous day!

dont have an ostomy nurse. long story...but im working on getting some convex barrier rings...i just thought if the output was less acidic, it might not eat the wafer so fast...

the problem is kinda a vicous circle...i have raw skin around the stoma, so i use powder, wipes, and paste...but, if i try to thicken it up, it stretches out the skin around the stoma when it comes out and hurts even more!!! (im guessing thats why it hurts more when it's thicker)...but, the last 2 days havent hurt very much, and this morning when i changed it, it looked a little better, could see some new skin! hopeully i can keep it up, and eventually just use the wipes...=)

Reducing stomach acid probably would not help, since by the time the stool goes through the small intestine, it is alkaline, not acid.

That said, trying antacids would not hurt either. Stay away from magnesium salts though because they cause diarrhea. Calcium salts are binding.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

I suggest trying Stomahesive. I use this EVERY time I change my appliance. It's a paste in a tube (like thick toothpaste). I put a ring of it around the inside edge of my appliance - this helps reduce any area output will touch my skin. In Canada, Hollister sends out samples. I suggest checking their website to see if you can get some of this. Oh, and don't forget the importance of heat - I put my hand over my newly attached appliance for a few minutes - the heat helps the glue stick. good luck...

Enjoy the box of stuff Smiler

Have tried using an ostomy belt? There is an elastic waste band that attaches to the Hollister product that was my lifesaver. It held the wafer closer to my skin, if I didn't use it, I would get burning.

The belts cost around $10, I had two - one I wore into surgery and the other I threw away. They are machine washable, so if I got it dirty, I just threw it in the wash.

Step 1: 7/7/2009
Step 2: 11/18/2009

Surgery was the best decision I made!
