Hi all,
Ipost every now and then, hope things are going better for all of you. I have been dealing with mild to moderate pouchitis intermittently for the past 4 months. I have been on flagyl mostly, but did try cipro with it for one course. Here I am 2 weeks later and once again another flare-up. I spoke with my gastro and he's concerned about the long ter use of flagyl. Other than a lousy taste most of the time, it is well tolerated. The gastro just put me on cipro and wants me to take rifaximin, it's *###xxx...expensive. Also, after my course of cipro and flagyl I had a stool sample and they found some type of rebound from the antibiotics. Anyway, I wanted to know if any of you have heard of or used rifaximin and if so what was your experience. I'm damn tired of this pouchitis.
Thanks,
Rich

Rifaximin is the generic name for Xifaxin, which is discussed below in this thread.

Rich, Lately, after my 1st Clinical diag of pouchitis, followed by a 14 day of Cipro, my GI scribed me a low dose of Xifaxan at 200mg x 2 a day for maintence. From what I believe, it's to be used while in remission of the pouchitis. This med doesn't absorb in your system like Flagyl or Cipro. I guess this may be a good thing also for long term side effects. I have tried it 2 times in the past after my takedown for other reasons. I didn't notice any side effects for myself, but then again a was so sick, I don't think I would have noticed any side issues anyways. Others on this side has used Xifaxan at higher doses like 400mg x 3 a day. Jack
