Does anyone find that cort enemas help with symptoms of pouchitis? I haven't been successful with cipro or flagyl in the past.

I am seeing the doctor today as for the past week I have been getting up 6x per night and going to the bathroom about 25 a day. I am going on vacation in a week and half and really want to get this under control. I used the enema last night and only woke up once. However when I use the bathroom in the morning my stools are still watery.

Thanks.

I had great success controlling my pouchitis symptoms with cort suppositories, but once I weaned off them, the sysmptoms returned, and the problem with using steroids like that long term are that they can thin the membranes, of the cuff, pouch, etc. and lead to other bigger problems. My docs would not let me stay on the cort suppositories long term.

After a recent Mayo clinic consult, I am now taking entocort (a steroid) which I will taper off of over the next 2 months, and I am rotating 2 different antibiotics. Levaquin and Rifaxin, I think. I had a bad reaction to Flagyl this spring, and it didn't help the symptoms either, and I had only a moderate (not full) response to Cipro. So far, I am doing about as good as my "normal" on my new regimin.

Thank you for the responses! I saw my doctor today and she said I was highly inflamed based on the lab results. She prescribed tincture of opium which I have never had before to slow things down and two cort enemas a day. I am getting the pouch scoped on Friday.

I have been taking Remicade for about a year and had my last infusion less then a month ago, so I can't get another infusion yet.

Thanks again.

I used liquid--not foam--cort enemas a few years a go when I had pouchitis after using N-SAIDS. My doctor advised using a pillow under my hips to tilt that area of the body back so the liquid would reach the back end of the pouch. It seemed to work for me.

I used to use paragoric liquid (a type of tincture of opium, but dosing is different)-it may help thicken you up, but I don't think it will help clear up the pouchitis if that is what you have. In fact, I now use codeine instead of the opium to thicken, generally, and even on that med, when I have pouchitis, I still have runny, watery stools.

Best of luck-I'm sure your scope will be informative.
