I have had my pouch for 10 years and was lucky to rarely have pouchitis. Since May, I've had pouchitis and I'm taking Cipro. Last week, I started having severe gas pains. I press on it to relieve the pressure. After reading your posts, I have started eating yogurt daily and I am cutting out sugar. (I love and miss sweets!) I called my surgeon and he suggested taking Pepto Bismol. It has helped with the pains. Can someone explain why its working? Do I have irritable pouch? Thank you for your responses.

Pepto Bismol has antibacterial qualities, plus it coats the stomach, protecting from the acid (antacid) and is antidiarrheal. It is sort of an all-purpose GI drug. It is used in conjunction with other antibiotics for some gut infections, such as H. pylori.

Jeff, you may want to try the caplets instead of the liquid or chewables, to keep it off your teeth.

Black mouth from Pepto is from sulfate reducing
bacteria,also black stool. Bismuth sulfide.
Pepto has been used to treat microscopic colitis.
Too much pepto for too long can be toxic.

Pepto Bismol has really worked for me. A week after starting it, I stopped the Cipro. It took a week to adjust (some cramping). Then I stopped the Pepto. Now every few days I take the pepto bismol to help with the cramping I get. Thanks for the responses.
