Is staying on flagyl for long periods dangerous or bad for the body?Go ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
I've not been here for some months because i've been eating flagyl which has made me able to work again, part time now but hopefully soon i will work 100%. Now, i've been on flagyl 200 mg 2 times a day, for two months or more... is this bad for the liver or anything else? And is loperamide dangerous at all, staying on long? My doc said that it is normal to stay on flagyl for big parts of one's life if that helps against pouchitis, when i asked if it was bad for the health... I have been taking flagyl with cipro in rotation with other antibiotics for 16 years, and I am currently taking a much high daily dosage of flagyl than you (1000 mg daily). My rotation has been cipro and flagyl, then xifaxin, then augmentin. This has kept my pouchitis in a simmering state (mild) for 16 years. The inflammation is present on scope every year but never gets too bad or worse. If I go off antibiotics even for a week I am dead meat. I have had my liver chemistries checked periodically and they are fine. My doctor recommended this. When I asked my first pouchitis expert about the possibility of liver damage or other issues from longterm antibiotic use, his answer was, "you are the guinea pig." This was back in the mid or late 1990s. You can stay on antibiotics long term but unless you rotate them properly, you will have problems such as loss of effectiveness and possible yeast infections, based on my experience. I have taken loperamide for many years as well, although usually only at bedtime. DJBHusky UC - 1972 as a 9 year old Takedown 1992 Chronic Pouchitis Onset 1995 Still J Pouching 2012
