Finally, a small study is completed and published regarding the use of VSL#3 for treatment of pouchitis. Granted, the pouchitis was mild, but use of VSL#3 twice a day was effective in producing remission in 69% of the patients. They also sustained this remission with VSL#3. While the study was small and more research is warranted, this is good news for those wanting to avoid antibiotic use when possible.

Hope that means insurance coverage will be easier to get in the future.

We can only hope...but as a treatment becomes more of a mainstream standard of practice, insurance companies then jump on board. But, unfortunately, we are a long ways off from that at this point.

Thanks for that link Jan! I'll add that to my appeal package and really appreciate your input on my previous post too. I'll be calling the VSL #3 company tomorrow to check into the VSL DS and will talk to my daughter's surgeon about it.

We are a long way from mainstream treatment with probiotics, but each study brings us one step closer.
