I'm a first time pouchitis sufferer. Is cipro better tha Flagyl? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

They are both equally effective and each has its drawbacks. For me, I prefer Flagyl because it does not promote C. difficile infections.
Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Hi Junebugger, For me, it depends on the outbreak. But, in some case one works better than the other in getting the pouchitis away. As far as side effets go the problem I have with Flagyl is that it leaves a metalic taste in my mouth. The problem I have with Cipro is that a side effect could be joint injuries and I like to take walks and I worry about that when I am walking about. Personally, I wouldn't say one is better than the other. just whichever one gets you feeling better. pat |

Hi June and welcome to the family.
I used to have to take a combination of both Cipro and Flagyl when my pouchitis was really bad. That really was horrible because both of them made me feel ill so the two combined would make me feel awful, but it was the only way to get the pouchitis into remission for me. You might want to start taking probiotics after you have finished your course of antibiotics as many people find that it helps to keep them in remission. Hope you feel better soon. Take care One glass of red wine per day is good for the heart..... it's just that mine's a big heart so I need a very big glass!!!! D-| Cheers! |

As others have said it depends on the person. I'm one that does much better with Cipro. This summer I had a bad flare up and took Cipro (500mg 2x/day) for 10 days and that fixed me up wonderfully, and then I'd been on Flagyl (500mg/day) ever since. 500mg Flagyl did not work for me, and I can't increase the dosage from 500mg or I get sick (nausea, plus the metallic taste gets worse).
So I'm back on Cipro (now only 250mg/day). So far, so good. I hope 250mg is enough to keep me free from pouchitis (though I can tolerate higher dosages of Cipro, I just don't want to take any more than I need to). Good luck! Long time UC sufferer, j-pouch July 1995 |
