Has anyone ever had severe shoulder pain during bouts of pouchitis? I have had bad shoulder pain the last year & it seems to correlate to my pouchitis. My family doctor mentioned the inflammation inside may be pressing on the diaphragm which would cause pain in the shoulders. That is his theory anyway. Anyone had this experience or heard of something like this?

If you experience the shoulder pain when taking cipro or flagyl for the pouchitis then the pain could be due to the antibiotic. Both cipro and flagyl give me intense shoulder pain along with other side effects.
Woah, I have the same thing. Is it like...a wicked severe, burning, searing pain? I get this about once a week, the only thing that works is lying down and completely relaxing my body.

I get this too when my tummy is swollen and hurting (why I don't know). The only thing that makes it go away is laying down. Also I get these horrible stitches in my sides and can't get them worked out! Wonder what all this is?

Thanks all for your comments. I am going to get it checked out & see if they can find the problem. I have had an X-ray, that didn't show anything & I have a bone scan scheduled. I was just suspecting that it has something to do with pouchitis since it is worse during that time. I'll update the post if I find out any information. Thanks all.

Just an update on this. They found arthritis in my shoulders on the bone scan. My family doctor gave me Diclofenac, an anti inflammatory, but my GI told me not to take it. So I don't know what to about it. I guess my only option is pain pills or live with the pain. Anyone have any suggestions?

You can have a steroid/anesthetic injection in your shoulder. That should help with the inflammation, so you can keep working through your range of motion. Otherwise, you can develop a frozen shoulder from favoring it too much.
Even a short course of prednisone is not out of the question. Periodically, I have a short course for an acute flare of my joints. I am currently in a taper right now.
Also, there are many different types of NSAIDs. Some are better than others, GI-wise. I am on Mobic (been taking it for more than 6 months without issues). Celebrex is another viable option, if you are not allergic to sulfa.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Well, well, well,,,, I was shell shocked to see this one in here. I started having this shoulder pain last year. It would grab me when reaching. I went to three doctors. Exrays, MRI, etc. They found nothing... My shoulder did freeze up limiting my arm movement. I did do the injection thing. Hate the way that made me feel. Just like prednisone all over again.
So we think it is related to antibiotics? My shoulder pain occurrance was not closely associated with an antibiotic treatment all though I do have to do that about once a year...
Will keep an eye on this page... Everyone please throw in your imput!! Thanks bunches!!
