I've had my pouch for 2 years. Just had my first diagnosis of pouchitis (scope & biopsy). I'm almost done with my 2 week course of Cipro, which seems to be working. I now have to decide on a maintenance therapy. Not sure whether to do Xifaxan or VSL#3, or a combination. I have been on Flora Q (1-2 per day) for over 2 years. I know if I take VSL and Xifaxan combined, I have to space them apart. Has anyone had luck with Xifaxan while in remission, for maintenance, after pouchitis? or VSL? Combination?
Any information would be helpful. My Cipro runs out tomorrow.
I too, have my first dx of pouchitis. I'm 6 months post takedown. Although I suspect this has been brewing for awhile they just did the scope in March. Inflammed, ulcerated, friable with inflamation extending beyond the pouch. They put me on a course of Xifaxin 400 mg 3x daily. With a three month supply.I too wonder about the VSL thing, if I take it now, When? Won't they just cancel each other out? Then there is the fibercon, according to the bottle you shouldn't take it two hours before or after another medication , can inhibit absorbtion.Anyway, they told me to take 4 fibercon tabs at once. Quite frankly it does nothing. Not sure about the xifaxin, since I've been on it , no reduction in stool and feel "flu-like" most of the time. I'm afraid all I did was ask more questions. Sorry Jack, hopefully someone has some thoughts out there. LoriP

Lori, Another source on this site says if you do take them together, the probiotics should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after the antibiotics. I'm still confused about how they would work together. I ordered 2 boxes of VSL#3 today but I'm not sure what I'm going to do when they arrive Thursday. I got to start somewhere. Any other ideas anyone? Thanks, Jack
