Hi, has anyone ever experienced a lot of hairloss while battling pouchitis? I did have a few Remicade treatments before but stopped back in September and aside from some emotional stress, I don't know why I'm still losing a lot of hair and I mean a lot, I'm surprised I still have some on my head.Frowner
Is there anything that I can do to get the hair growing again and fast?

I don't think pouchitis should cause hair loss. Check with your doctor. Is it possible that the Remicade treaments could still be causing hair loss? That would be my bet.

Good luck.

Hi Tina,

I tend to lose hair whenever I have gut problems and especially when I used to get pouchitis. I usually can predict when I'm about to experience problems with Wee Willie now too because my hair starts to fall out before I even get the full symptoms. It always grows back again but it's annoying to say the least, especially when the regrowth is about an inch long and ends up making me look like a a hedgehog!

I just think that some people are more susceptible to hair loss whenever their health is compromised, but Bodoni is probably right about the Remicade being partly to blame too. As he suggested, I would ask your doctor if you're worred.

I'm sure there will be others along soon with suggestions on how to speed up regrowth, but for me the only thing that worked was time and trying to maintain a healthy diet.

Good luck.

I did a bit of reading on this and there does not appear to be any reports of hair loss associated with Remicade use, even in the rare category. However, that said, hair loss occurs 1-2 months after the event that caused it, so your Remicade use could fall into that category, and it is not impossible to have an adverse effect that has not been previously reported.

But, also consider that hair loss is absolutely associated with stress on the body, and a chronic infection/inflammation is a real stress on the body. You cannot prevent already severely damaged or weakened hair from falling out (since what happened at the roots a month or more ago is unchangeable history). The only real treatment is to stop the cause of it and provide enough nourishment for the new growth.

You need to eat a balanced diet and include a multivitamin if you are not already taking one. Some docs prescribe folic acid supplements for this. I don't know if it works.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks everyone, I guess stressing out about the hairloss just adds to the stress already there, so I will try to relax and eat well and take my vitamins. I already see the short little hairs popping up so that's a good sign.
