I have had active pouchitis for over 2 years. It never really goes away although oral CIPRO definitely improves the symptoms. As soon as I stop taking it the symptoms come back. I have done some research on the internet and found some interesting info on metronidazole enemas as a positive form of treatment for pouchitis. It definitely makes more sense to me to treat pouchitis with antibiotics from the closest end rather than systemically absorb this medication into the whole body. Does anyone have any information or experience with this product? As well does anyone know how to get this product into my hands in Canada, as it is not approved up here in the Great White North. My doctor said he can not get products like this up here.

I believe you can get this in Canada and I found numerous online Canadian pharmacies you can order it from. Here it is sold as Metrogel and is FDA approved for topical use for vaginal applications and for treatment of rosacea (on the face).
They do not make rectal instillation product for this and you just have to either improvise with the vaginal applicator or transfer it to a rectal syringe. It is a clear gel that is not very thick. There are also Flagyl suppositories you might consider using. These are all off label uses. Here is a thread that discussed this: http://j-pouch.org/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3251071921/m/1961018412 Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |
