Can anyone help me out with Pouchitis

I had my pouch created in January, 1994. Suffered from Ulcerative Colitis since 1985, then I had 90% of my colon removed in Sept, 1994. Between the surgery of the removal of my colon and the J-Pouch, I had to be hospitalized for 5 days in December, 1993, ended up that I had either food poisoning and/or too much popcorn. No one instructed me back then to avoid popcorn. More on what happen in the next few sentences. In April, 1994, I had the ileostomy removed. What was supposed to be a 5 day stay turned into 24 days. I spent about 19 days in Isolation with a high grade Staff Infection of 14. I should have died from this. What happen was by the 5th day, I looked like I was 10 months pregnant, high fever and in a lot of server abdominal pain. The doctor came back to the hospital and I was in O/R for surgery and what happen was there was a tiny pin-hole in my pouch, suspected that this was caused by the food poisoning. It took him 15 minutes to find it and over two hours to flush it out; otherwise I would have drowned from the poison inside me.

In February, 1994 I had a major bowel obstruction that resulted in 32 inches of gangrenous small bowel. That was the worst pain I have ever had and I remembered in the ET I was praying for my own death. I was in intensive care for a week, and then put in a regular room the following week. Home for one week when I had to go back in the hospital to have my Gall Bladder removed.

I know I have pouchitis at the moment. The last time I had it lasted for 6 weeks back in May in June of last year. My doctor told me that if the anti-biotic do not work, I would have to have the J-Pouch removed and live with the bag the rest of my life which is not what I want to do. The Meds he gave me last year were Ciprofloxacin and the generic form of Flagyl called Metonidazole. The problem is that if you stay on these meds too long, it can lead to its decreased effectiveness. I have the Flagyl suppositories and will use those. The problem is my butt pain and burns are so severe. Because I worry about this I hardly ate all day. Just had some Rice Milk with some protein and one slice of toast with butter for breakfast, two bottles of water for lunch and this evening I made some flounder with a cup of white rice. Just afraid to eat anything.

I could not get a doctor appt until next Wednesday.

Any advice you can give me will be appreciated. Should I not eat?

Thank you

Rocket

rocket..your dr. is not exactly correct in that there are many antibiotics that can be used for pouchitis..the two you mentioned are just some..continue to use them for your pouchitis for as long as they work if you still have pouchitis there are others you can take..i for one have chronic pouchitis and if i am not on an antibiotic i am toast..so i switch antibiotics about every three or four weeks.alternating 4 different ones..

look up antibiotic dependent pouchitis on this site you will get lots of suggestions for the different ones used..such as amoxicillan,keflex,tindermax,xfaxin..

rocket forgot to mention yes of course you should eat..try small meals..maybe avoid things that might irritate your pouchitis..generally hard to digest foods until you have it under control again..avoid uncooked veggies, sweets for example..again you can find more info on this on site by looking up foods that are easily digestable..

Rebecca,

Thank you so much for your advice. I did not realize that there were other meds for this. I have the prescription from June, 2011 that I started taking last night. I normally do not eat uncooked veggies. I used to eat a small salad but can't anymore. At least I lost 3 lbs in two days. I will surf this site.

Thanks again and God Bless You

Rocco

I had a Croissant with butter for lunch and feel bloated. I haven't seen this on the forum if this is a symtom, although I suspect it it. I do know when I am on the meds, I feel so much better.
