Cipro side effect?

I recently did the 10 day cipro script for pouchitis. It helped the pouchitis even after the first dose. But after I finished the 10 days (500mg AM & PM) I began to get general body aches and a stronger ache in my right butt. This progressed over several days and the body aches seemed to progress to peripheral neuropathy, tingling numbness in my feet which grew stronger and progressed to my hands and last night to my face, lips, tongue and to a lesser degree, my whole body. The pain in my right glute was also at its peak last night. Today these sensations have fortunately begun to taper off.
I saw my GP today and he said it might be the cipro but did not seem convinced of that. He did blood work to check B-12, lime disease and a few other things, and did not seem concerned about stroke since the numbness is not one-sided.
I'm wondering if any of you have had similar side effects to cipro and if I should ever try it again??
Thanks,
Richard

If it were me, I'd be very careful taking it again. Generally, once you develop a reaction, it gets worse with repeated exposure. While those symptoms are not the most common, they have been reported, and it is not that unusual for side effects to begin after the completion of the course of the drug. Sometimes it just takes that long for the body to respond. Obviously, nothing you can do about it at that point other than hope it peaks and resolves quickly.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thank-you Jan. I am gradually getting back to normal. I still have a little numbness and pain today but it is much better than 2 days ago.
I will discuss this further with my doctor but probably will try flagyl next time.
I am scheduled for hernia repair this week. Hopefully I will be fully recovered by then.

Hey there, for me Cipro caused severe pancreatitis, horrible back pain where I could hardly breathe. So I can't take it anymore. I also was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which sounds like that deep "glute" pain that you are experiencing. My arthritis only seems to flare up when I'm having a pouchitis flare. It comes and goes. There are times when I can hardly walk. Never had the numbness though.

Interesting...I recently experienced similar side effects but was unsure if it was due to cipro use or Humira or perhaps a combination of both.
Like you, I experienced a terrible muscle pain in my butt cheek--like I had exercised excessively. It would take a few days to resolve completely, as it happened several times. My fingers were tingling but also ice cold. Lips also tingly. All of this has resolved for me. I'm unsure of which drug was causing this but now that I read your account, I am suspicious of cipro even though the symptoms continued to affect me more than a week after I discontinued the cipro. Actually, I even got another round of the muscle cramp that popped up out of the blue. Confused

Shelby, your symptoms sound just like mine. I also have the cold hands, tho I have had that on and off prior to the cypro. My symptoms are almost gone, just a little tingling in toes and fingers, but over a week since I finished the cypro.
The medication warning guide that comes with the cypro mentions these changes in sensation (specifically peripheral neuropathy) and possible nerve damage as possible side effects. It also states that tendinitis can happen weeks after taking the cypro. Many other possible (infrequent) side effects are listed too.
ps, I am not on Humira.

My last dose of cipro was 1/1 so it's been a while since I have taken it. Like I said, my symptoms have resolved so I hope yours will as well. It is winter so I expect that my hands may be colder than normal but my hands were ICE cold. In fact, at first I chalked it up to winter as the symptoms first started in November but when it got worse and worse and nothing was helping (gloves, more clothes, etc.) I knew something was not right.
Thanks for posting this as I was really at a loss and this helps sort of figure out the mystery a little. Unfortunately, Humira can have the same side effects that I experienced so it is difficult to know exactly what it was. I think the difference is that I had been on Humira for nearly 2 1/2 years without a problem. Thanks for adding that you're not on Humira, too. Smiler
