I had surgery in 2000 and have had chronic pouchitis. Was taking flagyl and cipro to keep it in check. My GI retired and I have new doctor who wants to get me off the antibiotics. He has me trying carafate enemas for the pouchitis. It is supposed to coat the pouch and allow it to heal. Anyone else heard of this?

I have a BCIR. I usually get pouchitis once a year around the holiday season. This year I had a death in my family and pouchitis seemed to get the best of me. After two weeks of Cipro, I was placed on Carafate solution which I but in my BCIR three times a day. It was not easy to insert but once I got the technique down pat, it seemed to maintain an element of wellness. They told me that Carafate is primarily used for treatment of duodenal ulcers.
I would suggest you try it. God Bless - Ellen
