Hello,
I had umbillical surgery last week and every since then I have felt awful. I have abd cramping, freq stools and flu like symptoms. I started taking Flagyl today, would it be a good idea to start a pribiotic. I have never taken one. Can anyone reccomend one?? I go to see the surgeon who did my surgery tomorrow and I hope he gives me another week off. I do not feel that I am physically ready to return to work. I am an RN and on my feet for 12-13 hours and I don't think I can do it. I hope someone can giveme info on probiotic and how this can help or not. Thanks, Lori live, love and laugh |

I'm a frequent proponent of probiotics on this site, but their main use for j-pouchers is for keeping pouchitis in remission after antibiotics have brought those symptoms under control.
You need a pouchoscopy, etc. to determine whether you have pouchitis and/or an infection, etc., related to your recent umbillical surgery. |

Hi Lori,
I take a probiotic called Culturelle. www.Culturelle.com Plus I take one small bottle of DanActive in the evenings. [ You can get it in the dairy isle next to the yogurts. ] By the way, non-fat yogurt is good for us too. |

I'd start the probiotic when you are finished withe the Flagyl. I take Culturelle too, order it online from Lucky Vitamin for a good price.

Weez,
Have a scope done to identify the problem. If it is pouchitis, get it undercontrol with a suitable antibiotic like cipro or flagul. Once under control, try taking VSL#3 probiotics although at a decent dose. Jerry |
