Surgery and what it cost you.

Just curios as to different areas and what your surgery cost was. I'm in Utah and My total was about $75,000 dollars. That's for both surgeries and all related items etc.

I spent only 4 days in the hospital instead of the usual 5 my doctor says he keeps people in for, he said I was doing real well and released me. Then when it came time for the take down I had the gastrograph and the tech couldn't get my bag to expand properly to be sure it wasn't leaking (the fluid would fill the pouch but then bypass it and go into my bag) While he didn't see any leaks since he couldn't get the bag to expand he wasn't comfortable in saying I was ok for surgery.

So we waited two more weeks has a second scan STILL couldn't get it to expand kept going into my bag. My docotr suggested going from the stoma instead, we tried that but he couldn't get the tube to go down the right path, BUT this time he decided still didn't see any leaking so he o.k.ed my surgery.

Second surgery I was only in the hospital for two days and released SO all in all that's why mine cost 75,000. Now from me of coarse with my insurance contractual adjustment that's not what they paid.

So what area are you in and what was your cost IF you are comfortable telling I'm just curious what other areas and doctors charge. OH speaking of which for the first surgery my doctor charged $4600 and the second only $1800.

I remember looking at my insurance statement for the first step of my surgery which was colectomy and j pouch creation. It was over 100k. I did a double take on that one. Step 2 (takedown) was a lot less...can't remember the figure. Thank goodness I was covered! I have to say you almost can't put a price on what these surgeons do. It's just amazing to me that someone can stand over me for 7 1/2 hours doing all that intricate work. Blows my mind.

DX UC 2005 when I was 37
Tried every drug and diet....all failed
Step 1- 6/25/10 (colectomy & J-pouch creation)
Step 2- 10/8/10 (take down)
Very pleased with my results.

The surgeon's costs are about the same as mine. The hospital seems a lot higher and I was in 15 days with step one and 5 with step 2. I'd have to pull the bills but don't think they paid, after the insurance adjustment, more than $30,000. I'll repost after I check my bills. I had my surgeries in Des Moines, Iowa. Interesting topic... I know a year of Remacade would have cost more.

come on people don't be shy. I know it's kind of a nosey question but I'm just curious the costs related to area and how different they can be.

I have a high deductable insurance. I met the deductable within the first week because of a hospital stay for the UC. Since I met my deductable the insurance stopped sending me statements. I have no idea what the surgery costs were. I know I made out pretty darn good though!

I got really lucky...my first step was in August and takedown was in December...I paid a total of $1500...because they were in the same calendar year. The insurance cost was well over $100,000. Mayo Clinic has an estimate department. You can tell them what you are having done and they will give you a pretty close price.

Have a fabulous day!

We have a high deductible of $4,800 which was all spent on me last year before the surgeries. I asked the surgeon if we could schedule the takedown before the end of the year so we wouldn't have to come up with $4,800 right away this year. I walked out of the hospital 1/1/11. My body was ready to have it - just made sure to have it in 2010. New Year's Eve was certainly not to festive in the hospital!

Our insurance company still sends an EOB, explaination of benefits, quarterly, so I see what they pay. Before they switched to this high deductible we didn't get EOB's for everything.

BTW - we passed the $4,800 a couple of months ago. Throw in a CT scan and lots of blood work - on top of doctor visits and prescriptions and I spent it really fast.

I'm sorry guess I should have been more specific. What I meant is what the cost WOULD have been had you not had insurance. Like I said the cost was approx 75,000. Now I paid no where near that my deductable is $2000 out of pocket then the insurance pays 100% so of coarse the rest of the year if anything happens I won't pay a dime.

I'm curious what doctors and hospitals in other areas of the country charge. Also like I said my docotro charged $4600 for the first but witrh the contractual adjustment my insurance paid him $1800, Also with contractual adjustments my insurance paid somewhere around 35,000 of that 75k bill. Sorry my bad guess I should have been more specific. Not what you paid but what the cost would have been, thanks.

My surgeon's bill was $15K, after contractual adjustments, he got more like $3K. Considering it was a 6 hour procedure, he was short changed! No wonder he gets $150 per office visit from ins!

The hospital bill was about $40K each time.

I made sure to have my take-down in the same calendar year as Step 1 so I won't have to pay the out of pocket maximum of $1500 again. I had to take a week off w/out pay in order to do it the same year (I was out of sick time - go figure!), but it was still cheaper.

I had a total of 4 surgeries, three for the whole pouch process and one internal abcess that required surgery. I quit counting after $130,000, but it wasn't much more than that. I paid a total of about $1000.00 including meds, supplies, deductibles... This was in Seattle.

68 k for 1st surgery - remove colon, create pouch, temp ostomy.

Included in that 68K was 16K for surgeon and her fellow, 26K just for the use of the O.R., 1,200 per day (4 days) for the room, 3k for the anesthesiologist, 3k for the recovery room, some $1,000 staplers used in surgery. - that's all the big stuff

Other misc - $250 each day for blood labs, heparin 3 times a day at $55 each, Got a complete list - it's kind of cool seeing all the items listed that were used in surgery.

Things are never so bad that they can't get worse.
