Hi All,
Hoping you can offer me some advice.. On Sunday I drove 6 hours and when I got out of the car..I had some severe cramping..felt like a blockage (have had one biggie in the past)..so I did all the typical stuff..rocking, drinking tea, getting in the tub (although it was a hotel tub and wasn't very big! Quite a sight!)..The cramping subsided a bit and has turned into soreness throughout my abdomen- sore to the touch and almost like that pulled muscle feeling...very painful. I spent Mon and Tues at the hotel waterpark with my kids and hubby which was prob good if it was a blockage as there were hot tubs and pools and lots of walking to get to those crazy waterslides... I never did feel the blockage "pass" if that is what it was..? Could a blockage cause such pain after the fact? (I should mention that I have been able to pass bits of stool and gas--but not without effort..) I did call my surgeon, but he is out till the 12th of May. I also am trying to get in touch with my GI- but no luck so far. Do you think CIPRO would help this pain, if it is pouchitis or the soreness of an "after blockage"? I have a few to get me going till I can reach my GI. Your thoughts? Many thanks in advance.. If you're not passing stool normally (just bits and some gas) and it has been a few days, and you're feeling a bit sore, I would go ahead and call the surgeon and/or his partner if he's out. It sounds like you have a mild blockage even now and an Xray could help direct you to what to do.
Best of luck! Shk2j UC Survivor Jpouch since 3/1998 3 hospitalized bowel obstructions |

I would not take antibiotics based on the symptoms you describe, and they could just make your stool more difficult to pass. However, I would continue with the simple diet, focusing on fluids, and avoiding anything with roughage or high in fiber. It can take a few days or more for the soreness to resolve after a partial obstruction. If the pain returns, you'll need to call your surgeon again, but at this point I don't think there is anything they could do for you that you are not already doing, since your symptoms are not acute right now.
Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

I had the same feeling and described it the same way after an "episode" a few months back. Because I'm pregnant, I called my ET nurse to just be sure things were okay and she said that the feeling I described could very well be the aftermath of a mini-blockage. I too never passed anything that explained the cramping but I did eat some fresh pineapple on that day and I think that was the cause.
