It's 3:30am and I've been up for an hour due to cramping and worrying. How long does it take for Flagy to kick in and feel relief? I've only had 3 doses so far, but expected to find some relief (or maybe it just takes time?). It's Thurs (early) morning now and the cramping started Friday or Saturday. By Sunday my whole stomach was tender. Saw my gastro Tues. He didn't want to examine me with the scope as he didn't want to irritate me more but based on my symptoms, he prescribed Flagy thinking that it's another bout of pouchitis (and cortifoam for an issue with ulcers at the end I've had in the past).

I'm still getting the cramping (worst at night when lying down), am maybe a little less sore, but it hurts when i try to go to the bathroom from pushing, and am also bloated (which considering I'm not eating too much, shouldn't be). My dr said to have a soft diet so am sticking to toast, puddings, eggs, yogurt and fluid.

I'm very worried that this is somethign else, although I don't have a fever or vomiting. My husband and i are also on a 3 month break from fertility treatments and are supposed to be returning for another round of ivf in January. This is upsetting me on top of dealing with the pain as my body is supposed to be resting and recovering...not having these additional issues.

Sorry for the long post. Does the Flagl just take time to kick in?

If you do have pouchitis, Flagyl does not work for everyone. Some get better results from Cipro.

Also, make sure you don't have a partial blockage.

Wishing you the best.

Usually you should give it three days to determine if it is going to do anything for you. You should not expect a complete cure but should have some positive effect in that time frame. However, if your symptoms significantly worsen or you develop new symptoms with the antibiotic, you need to call right and try something else.

Your diet may also be contributing. Even though you are on a soft diet, dairy and eggs are notorious for causing increased gas and bloating when you are inflamed.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

Thanks Jan. Today is day 3 (and so far taken a total of 6 pills) and I am starting to feel some relief. Am still quite crampy during the night and in the morning, but it does subside for the most part during the day...except after meals. Thank goodness..I was getting scared that it was an obstruction and all I could picture was that awful NG tube. I'm still bloated and it's hard to go, but definitely better than before.

So what should I be eating then? I have a wedding to attend in 2 days and am hoping I'll be ok enough to eat.

Until your symptoms subside sufficiently, you should stay away from spicy and greasy foods and stick with easily digested foods. You don't need to do major restrictions, but basically just figure out what works for you (common sense type stuff).
