Hi folks I am fairly new to this site. I cannot tell you enough how much help you all have been. Now I need some advice specifically regarding anti-biotics used to treat pouchitis in Canada.( A number of the drugs used in the USA are not available in Canada and Visa-versa)
I have been taking Cipro/Flagyl for some time now to treat recurring bouts of Pouchitis. Well it seems as though this combination is now longer doing the trick. Any suggestions ????? |

You can try levaquin, tetracycline, amoxicillin/clavaunic acid (Clavamox), or erythromycin. Rifaximin is the other one used, either alone or with Cipro, but that is probably the one you can't get in Canada.
Here is a good article that lists possible treatments: http://usagiedu.com/articles/pouch/pouch.pdf Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

I just did a course of cipro for my pouchitis,i was fine while taking it but after i stopped the cipro the pouchitis returned,..I hate taking Fagyl but it works really well,..the flagyl gives me metal mouth and headaches,..uhhg what a horrible drug that does wonders,..do anyone of those drugs that Jan listed above work as good as flagyl without the metal mouth?

Just an update. After a week of immense pain and finally another CAT scan today it turns out that I do not have Pouchitis afterall. I have a couple of small abcesseson the out side of my pouch which are causing my pouch to be irritated and giving me the symptoms of Pouchitis. Looks like more antibiotics.
Thanks for the feedback Larry |

Ouch! I remember when I had my abscess it felt like a hot poker up my butt, with zingers of pain going up my spine. I also had a very high fever. I hope the antibiotics do it, but be forewarned that antibiotics often do not work and the abscess needs to be drained to really resolve. I wound up in the hospital for 12 days and a drain for a month. But the drain took care of it and it never recurred.
