I have been having severe abd cramping, increased bm's. I had a scope today, with just taking a valium no iv meds.. My GI doctor said it would only take 5 minutes, well that was the most painful 5 minutes of my life. I was so inflammed the DR had to put lidocaine in my rectum to be able to insert the scope. My pouch was red and had pus. I have a severe case of pouchitis. I am currently taking Flagyl 3 times a day, that is after taking it 500mg three times a day for 10 days. I am currently taking low does for a while. The DR took biopsys and I really affraid. The DR also said I have a narrowing of my pouch He said it almost looked like 2 pouches. Has anyone heard of this. I would really like some input.

You may need a combination of antibiotics, such as Cipro and Flagyl together. Sounds like your pouchitis is really severe. You may even need some topical steroids to get this under control. I haven't heard the description you state, but it sounds like typical thickening associated with chronic inflammation.

Jan,
Thank you for always responding. Do you think the combo of antibiotics will help my pouch better. What kind of topical steriod do you think I should use. I feel like a cry baby, but I am really scared. My GI DR said to continue taking the 250mg three tid. I am leaving for Mexico Monday and I hope I feel better or semi-better. My biggest fear is that my pouch will fail. I know it sounds vain but that scares me. I know this has been a very difficult year for me both my parent have died. I think that the stress may have pushed me over the edge. I really believe stress plays a factor. I really am thankful for any advise. Lori live, love and laugh |

I need some help please. I had a scope done 2 weeks ago and my GI DR says it looks like I have two pouches, due to the narrowing. all 5 biopsies came back positive with UC. I had no idea this could happen. The GI DR. wants to put me on entocort. I worry about all the side effects.. I had so many of them when I was on predisone. I did not respond to predinsone At all. I gained a lot of weight, moon face etc....I am currently taking lomotil, flagyl 250mg 3x a day. I told my doctor prior to the scope that I felt the way I did when I had UC..
Any advice would be helpful. Lori live, love and laugh |

Entocort is a topical steroid, so you should absorb very little. Some people have been on it for years without any steroid side effects. However, it is not better than more local topical steroids, such as hydrocortisone or Entocort enemas. I would think that he suspects more inflammation than just in the pouch. Usually, the antibiotic combination is Cipro and Flagyl to try to get a very severe case of pouchitis under control.
Here's a good article: http://usagiedu.com/articles/pouch06/pouch06.pdf I might also suggest that you get tested for C. difficile if you cannot get this under control soon. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18467184?ordinalpos=...anel.Pubmed_RVDocSum Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |
