Hello

My GP has just prescribed predfoam rectal foam for my first bout of pouchitis. My concern is that after taking the first dose it caused all sorts of pain and discomfort and now I'm reluctant to continue.

Do you think this medication is really appropriate, and if so, I wonder why my consultant didn't recommend it?

Any advice appreciated.

PS
I should add I'm also taking Metronidazole.

Hi Dyvid,

I don't think that being prescribed a steroid enema is really appropriate for a first time bout of pouchits. It's usually prescribed when all antibiotics have been tried. The usual drugs to use are either Cipro or Flagyl (metronidazole). If they don't work independantly then a combination of both is normally tried so I'm surprised that your GP prescribed the predfoam without trying other antibiotic options.

How long have you been taking the metronidazole for? It doesn't work for everyone and maybe you would be better with cipro.

If I were you I would contact my GI or surgeon because not all GP's have enough knowledge or experience with j-pouches to know what the appropriate treatment should be.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thankyou for replying Shell

I was prescribed Metronidazone 400mg (1 daily for 30 days) back in November which had negligible benefit.

My follow up appointment was postponed until April 2008. Consequently I contacted my GP last week for a repeat perscription, this time a more intensive course (3 tablets daily for 10 days). Hopefully it will be more successful this time.

Thanks again
David

I'm pretty sure that your GP prescribed too low a dose first time round. Hopefully the increased dose will knock this on the head for you. If not then ask him for Cipro as that may be more beneficial for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.
