Hi everyone,
It's been a few days since I've been here.
Tha GI did a scope and bioopsy and the GP did blood and urine...blood in the urine ...prostatitis, now taking Sulfa drug and the biopsy shows inflamitory bowel of the last 10 to 12 inches of the iliem or backwash ileitis (BWI), now taking Pentasa brand of mesalamine...the pills are huge and 2 pills @4 times /day...makes me feel weird and still the diarrhea...the only good news is that butt burn is fairly mild. Sometimes the burn is so bad that it bleeds.
Go to see a urologist on Monday to make sure the prostate is gonna be okay.

I just read the post by Barbara Anne and in my case both the GI and the GP are discouraging a reversal...GP says there's a lot of scar tissue and reversing things will only creat more....the GI says that with BWI there's still going to be a problem with the stoma....
All I know is that if the Pentasa isn't affective the next step is prednisone...I'm not really interested in going there...

So has anyone had backwash ileitis...

I have an appointment with another GI on Friday...I want more than one opinion...

I had backwash ileitis. Wasn't an issue, but I had my surgery in 1995.

Older studies didn't show much of a correlation. However, newer studies show that backwash ileitis is associated with chronic pouchitis. I don't know that the same is true for the stoma.

That said, I don't think it is a contraindication for proceeding with the j-pouch. In my mind, I'd rather take the risk of possible pouchitis, and deal with it IF it happens than to automatically deal with the imperfect world of the ileostomy. But, bottom line, no choice is going to be perfect, so you just have to go with the risks you find acceptable.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.
