I had my take down Jan 6th. I am very happy with it I am not sick anymore or hurt. My problem is I am so tired and my hair is now falling out. Takes me back to my UC days but this time I have no idea why! I have tried to resume my life as normal but I am starting to have second thoughts. I am a single mom of 3 boys I go to school and work a full time job. I am not sure I can do it feeling so tired. Does anyone have any thoughts. Is it lack of nutrician or is this normal.

I experienced the same thing after my TD, with my hair falling out. MY MD determned my iron, ferretin, B12 levels were all very low. I started taking the supplements and finally within 6 months or so( I really don't remember when)my hiar stopped falling out. My natural curls returned beautifully again>
Talk to your MD about doing the blood tests Take care |

Thanks Judy, will vitamins absorb in us or will they just run thru us? Do I need to crush them first? I am going sometime this month to my reg. MD my sis is his nurse she said they would do blood work and look into it. Just wondering if this is a typical side effect? Thanks again

I lost about 1/2 the hair on my head after my colectomy, because I was so ill and malnourished, and had lost so much weight. This type of temporary hair loss is called telogen effluvium and usually occurs within 4 months of the physical stressor that triggered it, and may be what you are experiencing. There are many physical stressors that can lead to hair loss and surgery is one of them, so it's possible this is what is causing your hair to fall out. One thing you should remember is that if you do have hair loss due to telogen effluvium, you are not actually losing your hair, but the dead hair is being pushed out when the new hair grows in underneath it. You'll have short little "porcupine" hairs for a while as it is growing back in. My hair grew back in fully after 6 months. I was taking a supplement called Nutricap at the time, which I think helped (they are gelcaps so easier to absorb). Some people also have success with products containing Biotin. You can get both of these at heathfood stores.
You are less than a month out from your takedown so it's understandable that you would still be tired. I took several months to get my full stamina back. That said, it would not hurt to rule out other causes for fatigue and hair loss, such as thyroid, hormones, nutrient deficiency, etc. Dx'd Pancolitis June 14, 2005 Step 1 - Emergency subtotal colectomy/end ileo, July 6, 2005 Step 2 - loop ileo September 26, 2007 Step 3 - Takedown! Hi,Staycee: I have had many surgeries, and for me it has always been true that after I come out of general anaesthesia, I always go through a short period of hair loss afterwards. I understand your frustration, but in a couple of months or so, it should start thickening up again. Remember your body has taken a hit and is in the recovery stage, so be gentle and forgiving with yourself and what it has been through, and support yourself with good nutrition and supplements and rest.

Hi Staycee,
I went through the same thing and did a lot of research on hair nutrition. I started taking multivitamins, zinc, vitamin B complex, and vitamin E. I also ate more protein. After about 1.5 months my hair stopped falling out and it is now back to its natural growth. I hope this work for you.. Good luck "To a mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders." |

I also lost more than half of my hair--I am lucky because my hair was super thick to begin with. I started taking a skin, hair, and nails vitamin and now 5 months later my hair is growing back very fast. I have the little short hairs all over but it's all coming back in. It will all come back don't worry

Thanks everyone, I started taking vitiamins and its still falling out but slower. I am lucky also to have a very thick head of hair so the only one that recognizes I am losing it is me. I have hope it will stop falling out soon though.
