My wife had one step surgery 7 months ago....recently she had a burning pain inside her butt for the past 2 weeks, initially the frequency was in the 6-8 range, but over time increased to 12, while she did not have any other symptoms she assumed it was pouchitus and began taking Cipro, within a day the frequency went back to 6-8 and the burning pain went away....was this pouchitus ???

Sounds like it could've been, but the only way to know for sure is to have it scoped by her doc.

The "relief" after taking the cipro for a few days would be typical.... if the problem was pouchitis or bacterial overgrowth. I read here that a scope is really needed to diagnose pouchitis.

Hi Jules,

It's possible that Rebecca could have had a little internal butt burn or even a tiny fissure. Antibiotics will thicken things up because they are killing all the bacteria in the gut which is what (in some cases) increases the volume and consistency of stool. So taking antibiotics has slowed things down enough for the irritation to heal.

As Todd and Jim said, the only way to be sure she has pouchitis is to get scoped. In any case I'm glad that she is getting some relief from the Cipro.

Take care Smiler

Cool Shell Cool
