I have had my j-pouch since 1994 with an average of 3 or 4 bouts of pouchitis a year. Starting in late Spring and thru the summer I have been on Cipro twice, then Flagyl and now Xifaxan. I've been on these courses for a month at a time. The symptoms of pain lighten considerably when I am on the antibiotics but the one thing that is constant is GAS BUBBLES!!! when I am not on the antibiotic they double me over with pain. I have never have bubbles like this! I have to get in a knee chest positon to rid my self of them. Could this be yeast? I eat too much sugar and that feeds yeast. What do you think I should do? I have another week of Xifaxan and the way I feel now I know I will be in a bad way after the last dose I take. Should I ask for a few days of diflucan for right after I am off of the antibiotics? I use boric acid capsules to keep vaginal yeast away while on a course of antibiotics. Wish I could do someting now.

You can do something now - stop eating so much sugar! I did a detox diet over the summer and it improved my pouch function a TON. I was able to eliminate sugar for the most part, although it was a struggle at times. When I was having a weak moment I learned to use/substitute honey.
I was still on antibiotics and even though it prolonged my diet a bit longer than it was supposed to, I was able to achieve the good results.
There are several candida diet books available so you might want to take a look around Amazon or your local bookstore. I personally see a specialist who helped me with everything but I also used the books for recipes.
Your body is craving sugar because of the yeast. Once you stop eating it, you should notice that you don't crave it as much. I *used* to eat more sugar than I should have been but now I don't crave it near as much as I used to.

Thanks Shelby, I know you are right about the sugar. Do you have any suggestions about a good book on the subject?

Look for Yeast Connection Cookbook by Dr. Cook, or The Candida Albicans Yeast-Free Cookbook. Also, check out CandiGone, it is a supplement. Do you live near a Whole Foods or know of any natural stores in your area? They should carry it.
Something I find very effective - Just don't BUY it! As in, pass the candy and cookie aisles, leave the ice-cream for someone else to buy. Wink

Lori, Shelby is right. I too am having trouble with constant gas at present which means burping all the time and i can hear it gurgling inside too. I had a course of anytibiotics for my tooth abscess and since then i am struggling to balance myself - takedown on the 6th november looming. I had started to drink a cup of warm water with a large spoonlfull of organic cider vinegar with some honey in the moring and sipping warm water with half a lemon throughout the day to alkalinise my system. I stopped eating sugars and bread, ,,unable to eliminate fruits for the moment hence not getting such results yet.Cinamon is very good for eliminating candida so is garlic.I ahve also started on probotics with some FOS powder ( just a sprinkle in youghurt as it makes gas worse at the begining).
You can start by dropping all sweet things and see how that changes things or else you ll be fighting a loosing battle. Chromium picollinate is avery good supplement which regulates sugar cravings by keeping the sugar level in the blood at constant levels.
Good luck.

Love your bumSmiler
