I have been struggling with poutchitis off and on for almost 2 years now and have struggled to come off the cipro and flagyl without the poutchitis coming back. My doctor suggested Canasa to deal with the inflamation. Has anyone used it? Thanks.

I tried it,..it did nothing for me,..i started to flare up right away,..I had to use Rowasa enimas instead,..they worked. Why is it such a struggle to put your pouchitis in remission? are u taking probiotics? I keep remission for a long time with xifaxan (3 a day) probiotics (and 2 shots of Cortifoam daily) I get pouchitis 1-2 times a year and put it in remission in 1 day

I am taking cultural daily but I have no idea if that helps. On the anitbiotics I am fine (cipro/flagyl) but after a few days of coming off it goes down hill. I took Rowasa enimas when I had the colitus but I didn't know you could use it for poutchitis. Thanks.

Yes the probiotics are a must.
Taking flagyl and cipro doesnt always hit remission,..yes u can take Rowasa enemas ,2 a day with a Jpouch,..its needed for 3 weeks after a course of antibiotics (in some cases) then a week of taking 1 rowasa enema and then stop them,.if the pouchitis continues,..it may be chronic and need on going meds. Drew,
Do you take the cortifoam every day even when you achieve remission? I was told to only take it for up to a month and thank goodness I usually I go into remission anywhere from a few days to up to 3 weeks so I never had to take it for that long. Canasa is generally prescribed for cuffitis when you have a pouch, but I suppose it could work for pouchitis too, since it is also used for proctitis (colitis confined to the rectum. Rowasa enemas might do a better job of getting higher though.
Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

It helped me at this stage of my pouchitis but in the beginning I found any suppository difficult to hold. Can't hurt to try...pretty low risk compared to antibiotics!
