Almost four months out and am suffering from retrograde ejaculation. Will this subside? I have my boys frozen in Manhattan at a clinic. Does surgery help this situation? Starting to worry! All in one surgery done on August 1st. Very frustrated.

I would give it more time. Things may change in a year or so. But, this is one of the side-effects of the surgery. I don't know of any surgery to fix this. But have you consulted a urologist?

Thanks for writing. I think I may be rushing things as well, but it's disappointing. May I be one of the only 2-3% of people who are permanently effected by this? What are the chances of this happening? Unreal... I'll contact my urologist.

I do not believe that there is any surgery to correct retrograde ejaculation, since it is due to nerve damage. It is a good idea to see your urologist sooner rather than later, just in case there is some medication you are taking that is contributing to this. On the plus side, it should not be progressive and you should continue to be able to acheive erection and climax.

I also had retrograde after surgery. I don't recall exactly how long it lasted but I know it did not go away right away. My wife and I started trying to have kids 3 months ago and she is now about 2 months pregnant.

Hey, just thought I would drop my 2 cents on the subject.....

I just had opertion #2 Oct. 25th (jpouch construction) and scheduled for reversal on Jan 24th. I am suffering from retrograde ejaculation from this last surgery and I mean there is nothing, nada, not even the most minute drop of anything!!!!

I am lucky enough to still be able to have an erection and orgasm, but the erection part takes a lot more effort these days (it used to be just a change in wind direction would do it)

I was just in the hospital for a pulmonary embolism (make sure you stay active after your surgeries!) and my surgeon had the Urologists come talk to me as this was my chief complaint prior to the blood clot.

There are some medications that are used to treat retrograde ejaculation, but they did not believe there was much chance of it working for me (although they said they would give it a shot). The said when caused by surgery it is almost always non-reversable unless of course the nerves were just irritated and not permanently damaged. They also said to give things another 8 months or so to see what happens.

I was also told by my surgeon before surgery that there was such a minute risk for any kind of permanent damage and that it had never happened to any of her patients and that she didnt expect it to happen to me...Well, I am either the lucky first or the others were just to embarassed to go back and talk to her about it. Either way doesnt make me feel good!

I've had problems with retrograde ejaculation also. In the first few months I had no semen. However, the last couple months, I've been getting more and more output, but other times, there will still be nothing.

My doctor told me that it's a wait and see game and there wasn't much that could be done. It could take up to a year or two to recover from R.E. if you recover at all.

I understand that it can be frustrating and depressing at first. I suggest talking to your partner (if you have one) and telling that person how it makes you feel to have this problem. Make sure they know you need support in this. My partner has been very supportive and is always encouraging. Hopefully yours will be too.

Another question about retrograde ejaculations (which I'm also experiencing, 12 weeks after 1-step):

Anyone here who is sexually active in spite of the RE? Is it safe to do so, or could any damage be caused?

I always wonder where things go instead of coming out, and if there shouldn't be any problems caused by this?

No, you shouldnt have any problems. It will come out in your urine. Thats actually a good thing. If you ever try and get pregnent (well, not you per say), they can do a wash (where they wash the sperm out from the urine). At least thats what I believe the urologist told me when I asked the same question.

i am 2 1/2 years our of j pouch surgery. i never had retrograde ejaculation but my semes output was way down. given that i am 57 it is not an issue and my orgasms are as good as ever. so i would not worry unless you are looking for children.

Hi Brian - I started having the same issue with retrograde after my 2nd surgery which was in Oct 06. It is still the same but now I can climax a little better at least. I just had my final takedown 2 weeks ago, so I am obviously going to give my buddy more time. If I find anything that helps then I will definitely post! May God bless all of us through this.

I'm 7 months out and no erection or semen starting to get worried have tried meds and nothing the doctor says I need more patience.

I know this subject is harder to talk about then any of the other things we go through(at least it is for me). I am 12 weeks post total colectomy and 7 weeks post TD. Today I went to see my urologist and was very disappointed in what he said. My urologist said that it was probably permanent on the retro part. I know that it is still early so I am going to give it more time. I had a vasectomy 6 plus years ago so we are not planning on having more babies. I just need to hear from several people that are several years out that it does come back or that it won't. I know the stats that's not what I need. Thanks for all your help and willingness to talk about this part.

I saw a different uroligist 10-26-07 and he offered a more aggresive approach to my condition. He was upbeat and I definately left his office with a glimer of hope. I know that nobody wants to talk about loosing thier manhood so to speak. We talk about poop, our anus, and all the nasty things that can go right or wrong, but we don't want to talk about one of the most important parts of our relationship phisically.

I havent been coming on here much lately so am not familiar with your story. I will tell you that after my second or third surgery is when I started having retrograde ejaculation and some erection problems. It took about 6-8 months to get back to a comfortable level. I still dont have much in the way of ejaculate and my erections are not nearly what they once were (though maybe that is the difference between a man in his 20s vs his 30s).
So time does heal, but unfortunately it doesn't heal all. Hopefully yours is just going to take some time to wake up again.
