Alexis,
I do a lot of walking and have stopped drinking regular soda. I drink diet or just water. I try to eat small meals but, it's hard to when you love to eat. The other thing is my wife helps me and watches what I eat (food police) HA HA. I hope you find a routine that works for you. Good Luck Keep Smiling, Jim |

Alexis,
Walking is one of the safest exercises. If you choose walking, walk at least 30 minutes (briskly) 3 x a week. On opposite days, do some strengthening exercises. It's very important to find something you like - otherwise you won't want to keep it up. Don't skip breakfast - it's still the most important meal of the day. Watch portion size at lunch and dinner. Try not to eat after 7 p.m. unless you are diebetic. Let us know what you decide to do. Good luck! Peggy in Haskins, Ohio - I'd be lost with out all of you! |

I'll be looking to lose weight myself once I'm all healed.
I used to be a monster on the exercise bike, but I am no sure if that'd be a good one for me know considering all the problems I have had. My doctor suggested the treadmill. Most insurance companies will pay for someone to see a dietician, that might help. I actually quit all but caffiene free diet soda. I found that caffiene increases my frequency. Swimming is one of the best overall exercises for your body. It is low impact and works upper body, lower body, stomach, back etc. It can give you long and lean muscles, build up your endurance, lung capacity etc. You can burn approx 1000 calories swimming freestyle at a slow pace in one hour. You would have to walk approx 4.5-5 mph to get the same number of calories burnt. Just watch, you keep swimming you will notice a big difference in the tone of your arms, shoulders and back. It makes wearing those tank tops pleasurable. Keep doin those laps!

I think she meant that instead of sitting in a chair at home or work while talking on the phone, get up and walk around instead of sitting. I don't agree that "most people who talk on cell phones look out of shape." I think people who talk on cell phones reflect the population in general. kathy *********************************************************** Lately it occurs to me, what a long strange trip it's been..... Exercise is awesome for your health and can help supplement your weight loss. However, exercise, on the whole, is pretty bad at reducing weight. The amount of calories you can use while exercising is ~5% of your daily intake. And you can bump that up to ~8-10% if you exercise really hard for an hour or two. Again... that's daily.
Conversely, the amount of non-exercise activity, i.e. all other movements you make throughout the day that isn't intentional exercise, burns ~25% of your calories. So by making changes to your daily habits, you can see a significant change. For example, as was mentioned before, when talking on the phone, don't just sit there, get up and walk around. Park further away at the shopping center. Take the stairs at work. Eat lunch standing up and/or walk around for 10-15 minutes after you eat. I'm an exercise physiologist and this is a relatively new line of research and discovery. Especially the eating while standing up. Our muscles burn energy. We use more muscles to stand than we do to sit. Thus we burn more energy. If we use more of that energy right when it hits our system, you can see physical changes in the blood. Your body uses it and it stores less. etc... Increased daily expenditure combined with nutritional control (this is more than just eating less) will set you up for the best result. Also mentioned before, don't skip breakfast. This isn't an old wives tale. Your body needs energy right when it wakes up. If you don't give it some protein it'll start breaking down muscle. Smaller meals throughout the day is also a good idea or snack on quality protein containing snacks throughout the day. I use a whey protein drink and take sips from it at least every 2 hours. This keeps your body working to breakdown and process the calories (which requires energy). I could go on and on and will if anyone has more questions. But to sum up, don't misunderstand what I'm saying about exercise. It is great and provides so many great things for your health. But people who try to lose weight by exercise ONLY are setting themselves up for disappointment, and we want to avoid that. :> Good luck! This message has been edited. I agree. One of the most important concepts I learned in my medical weight management is that you have to combine calorie reduction with exercise to lose weight. Plus, you have to maintain the life habits to keep it off. What was OK when you were 20 is NOT OK when you are 40, because your metabolism changes as you age. You can't just cut the calories haphazardly either, you need those fewer calories to provide nutrition. We all tend to underestimate how much we eat and overestimate our exercise.
Those little handfuls of crackers and candy do count. And unlimited "good" food will make you fat too. Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Can I weigh in? (no pun intended)...you have to differenciate between exercise and activity...you need to be exercising and building muscle mass at least 3xs a week to maintain you present condition, 4xs a week to start loosing weight, 5xs a week to actually loose considerable weight. That must include 5hrs/week cardio and 2-3hrs/week weights/abs etc...that does not include activity. Activities are they physical efforts provided to do daily tasks other than just standing, walking around the grocery store or picking up the mail...you should (in a perfect world) do 1 exercise unit and 2 activities per day. An activity is walking 4-6 blocks to the store and carrying the groceries home, walking the kids to school instead of taking the car, biking to the post office etc...It is simply a case of math, Intake v.s. output...intake is what you eat/drink and output is the calories burned. You continue to burn at a higher caloric rate up to 3hrs after exercise so don't think that it is just the 45ms on the bike...but you need, and we all agree to cut down on the sugar, fried foods, white flour & fats...whole grain substitues are an easy calorie exchange. Switch off from white bread to whole grain and your guts absorb less and burn more, same with whole grain pasta. Olive oil instead of crisco or other fats, and chew, chew, chew....
Basically you can control your weight by modifying your intake/output balance by even 10% in either direction...10% more activity + 10% less intake = a 20% weight loss. Sounds more encouraging that way... Sharon It could be worse...oh, wait..it already has been! then I guess it can only get better from here.... |

I gotta agree with skn69, people making losing weight such a difficult thing when in fact its extremely easy, I think generally though people are just too lazy(??) to do what it takes or maybe they just don't know better. I don't want to knock general activities such as walking, but thats not an affective way to loose weight, it's something you should be doing on a daily basis anyway. If you're trying to lose weight, it's my opinion that if you're not sweating, you're not working hard enough. Having said that, if you're new to exercise, you'll want to start slowly and build your efforts up over a period of time, the key is consistency combined with a gradual build up of length and intensity. I also don't believe someone having excess fat and is new to exercise, needs to be supplementing calories to replace ones burnt during efforts less then 1-2 hours, and if you have white stains on your clothes when you sweat, you don't need gatorade and for f#@$ sake, stay away from red-bull type drinks!! One should however, drink tons of water, seriously.
Also, alcohol is the worst. If you drink on a daily basis or even excessively at regular intervals, good luck losing weight. I've been a competitive cyclist (with a j-pouch) for four years now and have the reverse problem, it's hard for me to get enough calories throughout the day without eating trash (sugar). My biggest issue is sleep and recovery, because of the amount of food I need to eat, I'm up 4-6 times a night and it's extremely detrimental to my bodies recovery. Any solutions out there for sleeping through the night? |

Steve - I have to say I'm in the same boat as you, though I'm not into any sport competively. I have trouble keeping weight on and sleeping through the time.
So far, I've found that taking 2 Gas-X chewables about an hour before sleep and somewhat limiting my water intake helps me sleep better. I am sure to drink plenty throughout the day, so that I don't get dehydrated over night. I can't say this will work for you, but it has been helping me. I'm getting up about 1-2 times per night now. www.lifeisapotty.blogspot.com C-diff: 3/2001 UC Diagnosis: Summer 2002 Step 1: 9/10/10 Step 2: 12/8/10 Cuffitis: 2/2011 Chronic Pouchitis: 11/2011 |
