Hi guys
I had my J-Pouch surgery in 2000 after having suffered with Ulcerative Colitis for five years. During that time I was on very high doses of pred as high as 65mg per day. Since my surgery my life is great I finally got married and have a son and one more on the way ( this was something that I never thought would happen ). My problem is that for seven years I have been trying to get my weight down and have no luck. I have tried personal trainers, diets and everything I can think of and still nothing has worked. Has anyone had the same experience or can anyone give me an idea of what I am doing wrong? Thanks

Two thoughts come to mind. Adrenal glands or your thyroid. I think that Prednisone at high doses for extended durations can have some adverse effects on your adrenal glands. Not sure of the effects on your thyroid. I'd talk to your GP and get both of them checked as a starting point. If either your adrenals or thyroid is not functioning properly, it could impact your ability to lose weight. Good luck.

Wow, my problem is just the opposite. I have problems keeping weight on. My meals seem to fly through me. My surgury was in 2001. I've always been slender. Now it's a battle to not look skelital. I would agree with another comment here that you should check your endocrine system / Thyroid. I found mine had stopped working. Started thyroid medication about 2 months ago. Still not having much success with weight gain but feel better.

Well, Im feelin your pain too BigV. Since surgery Ive managed to hit the 200lb mark. Something Ive only ever done one time before and that was from being bloated on prednisone!

Ive joined a gym and need to start watching what I eat better, but I tell ya...right now Im having some fun eating all the things I never could with UC and not having to suffer the painful consequences for eating them! Smiler

Hope things are going well,

Bill

I'm the same as RyanM. I've had the j pouch for 3-4 years now time flies not sure how long. I'm 23 and can't seem to gain any weight. I just weighed myself today and i'm 137lbs. I'm constantly hungry so my appetite is their, but the more i eat the more i will go to the washroom. I'm thinking of adding boost or ensure and maybe immodium. Maybe i should look into that thyroid issue, because i know that my sister takes something for her thyroid.
