Hi - I'm new here, but I've been reading this site a lot to get research for my husband. He had UC for 13 years, and they found high grade dysplasia at his last colonoskopy. So last week he had his colon removed and the j-pouch was created. The surgery went great and he got out of the hospital yesterday. Take down surgery is in 6 weeks or so.
So now to the retrograde ejaculation part... He's able to get hard, but not as hard as he could get before, and nothing comes out when he climaxes. So my question...is this normal for 1 week after surgery? Or does he need to see a urologist? If he does have retrograde ejaculation, will we ever be able to have children? Any thoughts would be appreciated. This message has been edited. Last edited by: BLECCE, |

Yes, this is retrograde ejaculation, but it is too early to tell if this could be permanent or not. There can be significant swelling/bruising in that area where the nerve bundle is that controls sexual function. The good news is that erection is functional and he is able to climax. I would give it 3-6 months before worrying too much about it. You can see a urologist sooner, but he would probably tell you to wait and see. Still, sometimes it helps to hear it from a professional. At the very least, you can bring it up with his surgeon at his next post op visit (that is of course, if it is still a problem).
Medications can help if this does not resolve on its own, or if it does become permanent and untreatable, artificial insemination is possible by recovering washed sperm from his urine. http://merck.com/mmhe/sec21/ch240/ch240f.html Jan Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass. |

Thanks Jan! We'll definitely discuss it with his surgeon at his post op visit.
Is "temporary" retrograde ejaculation common after this type of surgery? Or is my husband just one of the few unlucky ones? |

Well, yes and no. It is sort of common, in that it is an issue brought up by quite a few men. But percentage-wise, it is pretty uncommon as far as complications go, now that they use nerve sparing surgical techniques. I would venture to say that it is more common as a temporary issue than permanent.

I agree with Jan. Especially note if they sent Hubby home from surgery on Flomax, his output will be very much decreased (mine was). Give it some time as Jan indicates. Other health issues (weight, hypertension, stress, age, etc) can all contribute to the plumbing not performing like when we were twenty (Ah, the good old days...). I'm glad you are supportive of your spouse, and I'm sure he appreciates it, too.
Take care, Mark |

Thanks for the reply Mark.
My husband is only 31, weighs 150 pounds and has perfect blood pressure...so those aren't contributing factors. The only medication he's taking is Hydrocodone (sp?) for pain and I don't think that causes RE. Before surgery, his "performance" was completely normal...but now he has zero output. We'll just give it time and see what happens |

I had retrograde ejaculation for several months after surgery...You have to give it some time..In the beginning nothing would come and then little by little more would come out..Im two years post opp and i still get it from time to time...I will see it come out in my urine..Good luck and enjoy

Thanks for the reply...it definitely gives us more hope!!! So far it's been 6 weeks since his surgery and there's still nothing at all.
Like you said, we just need to give it time and see what happens! |

I was 28 when I had my first surgery I have the same problem your husband does, not trying to scare you mine still is the same a few years later.. I have not been able to have intercourse in 3yrs . I have partial but I do notice inprovements from time to time ...every yr I notice better results so if it is perma it shouldn't be the same as I experice this first hand.
But your hubby is new in the game so he may be ok my advice is to have him work at it after a few months after healing that does help.. try to have sex with oral, master bation or w/e that helps a ton.. I have the pump meds none works as well as do it your self .... anyways goodluck to both of you if there is a will there is a way . STEP 1 SEPT 20 2006 STEP2 MARCH 14 2007 UC JULY 16 2003 hernia scar revision and more march 22nd 2008 end up being step 1 all over again resections . may 10th infection in wound had to have surgey to open me back up sept 10th perma ostemy SO much for step2 14 operations in all due to UC ended up with open wounds as of july09 and perma ostemy not working out well. |
