Starting a support group.

In Philadelphia, Grace Williams, an E.T. Nurse,
saw the need for an ileoanal support group.
With the support of the local chapter of CCFA, the
group was started in 1986.
We meet monthly at Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia
Dept. of GI.

A typical group attending one of our monthly meetings

Our group, The Philadelphia area ileoanal support group, meets at 7:30 PM at Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania Health system on the second wednesday of each month.
The ileoanal support group welcomes all individuals and family members who are considering, undergoing or who have had ileoanal surgery. Our meetings are very informal and are geared to talking about this surgery and answering your questions. Sometimes we have guest speakers at the meetings. In the past months we have had a surgeon, gastroenterologist, nutritionist and nurse researcher speak to the group about different aspects of ulcertive colitis and ileoanal surgery.
Most people find it helpful to talk to others "face to face" who are going through similar experiences. Social support is important as you undergo your surgery. If you are not able to attend the meetings but would still like to talk with others who have had the surgery, we can connect you with those people and you can talk with them by phone. Please feel free to give us a call or join us at a meeting. We hope to hear from you!
